Maria (6056), Thisted, Denmark Mar 16, 2009 It is hazy, red-brown with small pieces of sediment and a limited head. The aroma has notes of raisin and other dried, dark fruits, malt and caramel. The flavour has sweetness and notes of raisin, prunes, malt, alcohol, caramel, candy sugar and hints of licorice. It is well balanced and the rich malty sweetness makes it very pleasant to drink. RedSox2004 (353), Pacific Palisades, California, USA Mar 13, 2009 Poured deep blood red with a wonderful soft head that dissipated to a pillowy film and left intricate lacing all the way down. Ripe dark fruit aromas, mostly figs and dark cherries, with some spiciness and alcohol. Rich malty flavors of ripe fruit and caramel accompanied by a great warming alcohol presence. Bready maltiness and some smokiness also make themselves known. Clear peat notes are prominent and make it obvious that this is another special contribution to civilization from the Scots. Great stuff. finol (475), Nacka (Stockholm), Sweden Mar 8, 2009 750 ml bottle from Ölbutikken.
Dark coke colour with a small head.
A light butter and caramell aroma.
This is a heavy beer. foundmd (163), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Mar 8, 2009 750ml bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown (almost black) with a medium sized creamy head. Aroma of caramel malts and fruit. There’s a subtle complexity to the flavor. Sweet caramel malts with cocoa, molasses, dark fruit, vanilla, and light hops. Alcohol is present, but not overwhelming. Smooth and full-bodied. Fantastic nighttime sipper. porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Mar 8, 2009 (750 ml bottle from Julio’s Liquors, cellared for 1 yr. after purchase) Pours tawny auburn/chestnut with a finger or so of yellowish-biege head that recedes to a thin cap. Sweet malty aroma of toffee and caramel with a sweet earthy overtone. Mouthfeel smooth, full, sticky and a bit fizzy. Plenty of nice heavy, persistent rings of lacing. Flavor is big sticky toffee and caramel overlain by a piney medium-bitter twang. Bitterness builds a bit towards finish and gives a nice hit. There are light hints of smoke and peat. A little hot but it is a nice warming alcohol presence. Kind of like McEwan’s but a little less sweet, less filtered and with a more American hop profile; a bit less rich and complex than Duck-Rabbit which is still my favorite Scotch. hirigalzkar (550), Stockholm, Sweden Mar 8, 2009 Bottle. Look: Dark red-brown. Beige head. Smell: Anonymous aroma. Buttery. Taste: Wonderful vinous taste! Chocolate. Raisin. Butter. Some oaky thing. Small hop bitterness and roasted flavors in aftertaste. It’s a little too laid back to get a higher raiting in flavor. Overall: Full bodied and incredible smooth! danielcurtis81 (879), San Diego, California, USA Mar 7, 2009 Bottle. Moues a deep deep rich brown. Nose is very malty and sweet. Flavors of sweet malt, nice toffee, nice alcohol but not over powering. Mouth is warm and chewy. This is my first scotch ale and at first it was good but as you drink it it quickly grows on you. Super smooth and subtly flavored. Can not wait to try this one again. carruthm (1109), Seattle, Washington, USA Mar 6, 2009 Updated: Apr 16, 2009aroma upon opening is a rich dark chocolate with deep dark fruit spices. Pours a delicious brown with a thin head. After pour, the malt aroma comes out to play in a big way and the aroma almost has an irish cream note as well. Taste is nutty, with a hint of the alcohol behind it. Finish is a very nice malty crispness and toffee.
