J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bottle. Moues a deep deep rich brown. Nose is very malty and sweet. Flavors of sweet malt, nice toffee, nice alcohol but not over powering. Mouth is warm and chewy. This is my first scotch ale and at first it was good but as you drink it it quickly grows on you. Super smooth and subtly flavored. Can not wait to try this one again.

aroma upon opening is a rich dark chocolate with deep dark fruit spices. Pours a delicious brown with a thin head. After pour, the malt aroma comes out to play in a big way and the aroma almost has an irish cream note as well. Taste is nutty, with a hint of the alcohol behind it. Finish is a very nice malty crispness and toffee.

Very subtle, Glenmorangie-like smoke in the aroma. Super rich malty sweet flavor.

"is everything they make near the top of the lists, or does it just seem that way? one of the best, if not THE best, scotch ale. can’t do much to improve it with the limitations of the style. Heavy, smoky peat malt flavor and feel. great beer! re-taste 2/09 more choclatey and less smokey maybe than a scotch ale should be but holy crap is it good. velvety smooth, looks amazing, and tastes great. more weet than smokey, little to no hops, perfect body. same score (4.6)!"

Thanks for sharing this one bro! Pours out a deep rich brown color with thick light brown hair. Aroma is of rich toffee, caramel, brown sugar and alcohol. Taste is caramel, brown sugar, light wood and alcohol. Alcohol is well hidden and every works well. I’m amazed this is a scotch ale as it reminds me of a lot of barley wines I’ve had.

Pours a dark brown to pitch black color with a thick creamy off-white head that fades slowly and leaves some streaky lacing. Aroma is toffee, caramel, wood, and a hint of smoke. Taste is like a Werther’s Caramel candy - toffee, caramel pop, and some sugary bitter tang. Alcohol is well hidden.

YES! I love this beer. Bottle thanks to a generous extra from dchmela. Deep dark mahogany pour... looks cloudy, almost black with yellow/tan bubbly head. Lovely looking beer. And the taste... it’s a big beer, and sweet, but it does everything right. Complex malts, with notes of chocolate, peat, nuts roast, real caramel, slight vanilla, tobacco, and fruits... maybe raisins? Long, long finish and a silky--nay, velvety!--texture. What a pleasure. Yum.

From Voldby, DK. Bottled, 140209. Dark brown with beige head. Aroma of dried fruit and malt. Flavor is balanced sweet to the dry roasts. Some smoke and a hint of the alcohol.
