J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Pours a deep brown with an erupting smoky brown head. Aroma of caramel, peat, nuts, rasins, tobacco, malts. Flavor is nuts, molasses, smoke, peat, chocolate, caramel, roast. Very well balanced and hides the alcohol rather well. Awesome scotch ale, can’t believe I haven’t rated this before despite drinking it many times.

Reddish purple with a thick beige head. Aroma like chocolate pie with a dash of chili powder. has strong raisins and chocolate flavors. Lots of nutiness and tobacco flavors. This is like a beer reduction sauce. Fantastic.

Botter 75 cl. Average off-white light foamy head that mostly lasted. Good display of lacework. Dark mahogany color. Aroma was very dried fruity with a hint of smoke notes as well. Also some mild floral and grape like notes. Over the palate came heavy roasted malty and caramel notes with a good mix of alcohol to balance the sweetness. Also some notes of oak, toffee like and chocolate. Full bodied with an average carbonation and mild dry thick texture. Heavy heavy heavy sweet texture that is countered with some bitterness. Lingering sweet malty thick finish with a warming alcoholic touch. WOW what a beer, Eric you were not kidding when you said this beer rocks!

750 ml bottle I bought summer of 2007. Deep mahogany pour with 1/2" tan head. Nose is malt, dark fruit, chocolate and alcohol. Nice smooth palete with substantial body. Alcohol makes it warm in the mouth. Flavor is malt, caramel, chocolate, dark fruits and alcohol. I enjoyed this brew very much. It was sweet, but not cloying as some scotch ales can be.

Appearance: Pours like black coffee and starts with a tan 1/2 inch head. A creamy ring of suds stays at the top after the head subsides. Aroma: Raisins, chocolate, plum, and dark roasted malt. Taste: Raisins, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, a good amount of spicy hops, coffee, coca cola and booze. Also reminds me a little bit of Black Forrest cake. Mouthfeel: Chewy and thick, and very smooth. Overall: A fantastically complex beer that only gets better as it warms up. A great use of roasted malts and spicy bitter hops. I dare anyone to try this beer and find fault in it. Not sure it can be done.

Dark brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel, malt, raisins and a touch of citrus hops. Sweet and malty flavour but with a touch of hop flavour and bitterness. I don’t like my beer too sweet, so it’s hard to love this.

750ml Bottle: Sweet aroma of toffee, caramel, malts, light toasting, brown sugar, light molasses, slight chocolate, and slight fig. Poured copper/amber/brown in color with a small, dense, tan head that diminished into a film on top of the beer that lasted throughout. Cloudy. Sparkling. Full of medium-sized particles throughout. Flavor is light to medium sweet. Tastes of caramel, malts, honey, maple syrup, light nuts, light chocolate, toffee, slight peat, slight smoke, and the slightest hint of alcohol. Medium to full body. Viscous, sticky, texture. Average carbonation. Sweet, chewy, caramel body coats the mouth. Almost like eating a caramel/toffee candy. Pretty darn amazing for the style.
