J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Excellent golden hued mahogany/brown with a persistent creamy head. A lot of dark earthy fruit and sweet malt in the nose. Flavor profile followed suit. Dark fruit, sweet caramel malt with a perfect amount of bitterness in the finish. Easily one of the most full mouthfeels of any beer I’ve had to date. Another great release from Alesmith.

Chestnut brown with a creamy beige head, long-lasting. Huge caramel and fig nose, some brown sugar. Reminiscent of a quad. Delicious flavor, mix of caramel, raisin, smoky malt, alcohol. Great mouth too, huge and delicate. Wonderful stuff here, it all comes back scotch in the end, superb combo. Arguably the best I’ve had from AleSmith.

Had this brew at G.A.B.F. 08". Aroma reminds me of a Barley Wine with a rich red wine like scent. Color is a deep chocolate brown. Carbonation looks good with a small tight tan head. Starting with a full body it goes down with a rich feel. Finish comes in with a bold sweet malt flavor that has dried fruit flavor in it. In the after taste as the sweetness fades out a mild bitterness can be detected. This is a fabulous brew and seems more like a Barley Wine then a Scotch Ale.

Plum, figs, apricot, and caramel aroma. Pours an amber redish orange color. Foamy patchy head. Sharp cherry and caramel flavor. I also get some apricots, and brown sugar sweetness. Palate is smooth, sweet, and easily drinkable. Tasty beer.

Great pour of a dark brown (almost black) with a tint of ruby, thick dark tan head that fades to thin and lacing. Aroma is sweet of smoke, chocolate, molasses, and small hint of fruit. Flavor is much of the same cept that the alcohol presence is there. Medium bodied, smooth and a good brew overall.

Bottle from Secret Santa. Dark brown color. Toffee, butter and a hint of banana in the aroma. Caramelly buttery flavor with banana and blackcurrant. Flowery hops. A firm hopbitterness lingers on in the aftertaste. Tannines, alcohol and rubber. Full bodied, thick mouthfeel. Exceptional balance.

Good god what a beer. Man oh man. Brown pour, pretty small head. Aroma is just simply amazing. Caramel, toffee, smokiness, vanilla, wood. Flavor is just complex, smooth and amazing. I get hins of vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, graham crackers. Goodness I really must get more of this. My oh my.

Wee as in consumed by me, myself and I all in a rather Scottish mood. Had this a couple of years before getting another from a good friend so decided it was time to have at it. Nice malt and body with hops still in the play despite a good deal of time for all to oxydize. That last part didn’t seem the least bit detrimental to a beer like this - very appealing and that’s saying something for a guy that tends to lean to the hoppy side a lot. When oh when will I break out the other one?
