oteyj (713), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA Jul 12, 2008 Snifter. Pours deep red with copious beige head. Aroma is powerful and complex. Caramel, toffee, molasses, and toastyness are all characteristics of the malt alone. Other aromas include vanilla, and walnut, though roasted malt is prevalent and hard hitting. Flavor Was huge of malt, hitting from every possible angle. Malt character and complexity of this nature is seldom seen, and unrivaled in my expirience. So many flavors and facets of the malt come out not only in this style, but in this particular well honed example. Palate is incredibly smooth, creamy, full, rich, viscous, with a sticky coating property and some tingling carbonation. An amazing example of an amazing style- big ups to Alesmith for this beast of a brew. craftycarl21 (510), South Hero, Vermont, USA Jul 11, 2008 pours a black red, like a garnet, with a massive frothy head and great lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, toffe, vanilla, a hint of nectarine, and molasses. Palate is creamy beyond belief, flavor brings roasted malts to the forefront, slight alcohol in the front part of the sip, still hints of vanilla. Stupendous beer overall. Jblauvs (530), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Jul 11, 2008 jewel ruby, huge head, offwhite head. roasted, Toffee malt aroma. Creamy beyond belief. deeep caramel. smokey. molasses. chewy and vaslty complex malt theisti (1640), Leawood, Kansas, USA Jul 8, 2008 750 ml bottle purchased mail order from South Bay in Imperial Bay, California. Not sure age on this, though I purchased it from Joey on the May 29th, 2007. I believe this was a fresh bottle when I purchased it. Pour is dark mahogany with a tan 2 inch head. As the head retreats, it reveals nice lacing. Pretty beer. Aroma of big caramel bitter sweetness. Some peaty earthiness in there as well. Powerful nose. Taste is peaty, bittersweet chocolate chips and yeasty. Smoky too. Aftertaste reveals some alcohol burn. Some sea-saltiness in the finish as well. Tasty beer, though not as rounded and complex as the Flyers 140 Schilling I recently tasted. Palate is medium to full, quite mouth coating. Acknud (770), Morganfield, Kentucky, USA Jun 30, 2008 I wish I had drank this in the winter instead of summer. It warms you all over. I would have pegged this at an ABV of 15-16% instead of ten. Aroma is heady with alcohol, vanilla, plums, earth, and chocolate. Very warming taste, alcohol explodes in mouth and warms you all the way to your toes. Vanilla, molasses, caramel, plums, hops all swirl for attention. Oscbert (531), Sacramento, California, USA Jun 28, 2008 ~Pours a nice red color (when held to light) with plenty of carbonation and thick creamy off white head.
~Very sweet malty aroma with alcohol and dark fruits.
~Sweet smoky malt flavor, caramel, raisin and wood.
~Full bodied, a bit chewy, alcohol tongue tingles. Great finish. Bitter and a tad salty. Alcohol leaves warming sensation throughout mouth.
~Very enjoyable. I wish this was easier for me to find in my area. I would love to try this on a cold winter night after a day on the mountain. darkninja67 (40), Boston, Massachusetts, USA Jun 25, 2008 750mm bottle- pours a cloudy reddish brown color with a tan head. Aroma of caramel and brown sugar. Flavor is chocolate and some caramel and is quite warm to the palate. Chewiness was noted as this is not a timid beer. Once again Alesmith has delivered. Well done. Rogueone (506), I F&ckin’ hate those guys from, Ohio, USA Jun 24, 2008 I actually had never had this until last night. $14; it better be good. Thankfully, it delivered in a major way. There are beers, and there are BIG beers, and this one is in the latter category by a landslide. Aroma is even thick, of molasses, cocoa, brown sugars, ash. Flavor demands a presence on the palate, almost chewy enough to eat. Very rich caramel malt profile with only a slight trace of peat (thank God). YUM!!
