Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Well structured, and complex brew, which pours deep brown with mocha head. A smokey and malty entry with hearty, and dusty aspects coupled with layered and complex levels brings forth memories of a foggy Scottish hillside, with warming brews by the fire. nicely done....

Dark chocolate color. Medium beige head that laces. Spicy phenols with raisin prune and roasted malt aromas. Flavor is spicy with a rich malt backbone and a hint of peated malt. Hopping is moderate. Most of the bitterness comes from the acrid character of the roasted malt. The finsih has a licorice anise effervescence. A truly multidimensional beer!

Pours a dark bourbon color with little head, and little lacing. Smells of sugary malts, and a marginal hop spice. Tastes of smoky anise, protuberant dark fruits, bready oats, and some of the most pungent caramel malts I’ve tasted. A whit of bitter molasses also seems to annex the finish, along with a wisp of alcohol/merlot dryness. Very rich body, and with smooth figure.

Super dark and full of bitterness without none of the malty sweet undertones. Really awesome beer but very well covered alcohol, so it doesn’t come off hot at all.

Dark mahogany in colour, very clear first pour getting more muddy looking as you near the end of the bottle, thin beige coloured head, some lacing. The aroma is of rich malt sweetness, dark fruits, lots of plums, light smoke and some alcohol. The flavour is again rather plummy, some noticable bourbony alcohol, quite malty, some chocolate mint, lots of dark fruits. Warming mouthfeel, medium body, smooth carbonation. Finishes warming from all the alcohol but still incredibly smooth, seems to die off a bit to quickly though. This started of rather disappointing but I think that it was because of the cold bottle, got much better as it warmed up.

750ml bottle obtained in a trade with <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?U target=blank>Sven, thanks Steven.
Opened on April 15, 2007.
No best before date but I’ve had the bottle for at least 2 years.

Bottle via Yonkers! Dark color. Smell of malt, caramel, dark rasins, brown sugar, coco and nuts. Taste of malt, liltte smoke, candy rasins, brown sugar, lite chocolate and caramel/toffee.

Clear mahogany body with a tint of red, virtually no head. Sweet alcoholic aroma with lots of dark fruits. The flavor is somewhat of a letdown. Heavy malty sweetness - toffee, brown sugar, alcohol. Just way too much overall. Signature alesmith syrupy body, and again not really in a good way. For me, this is just too boozy and lacks subtlety.
