ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 7, 2007 Bottle RBSG ’07. Malty nose with the promise of higher alcohol. Nice, hazy dark brownish amber. Thin, yellowish tan head. Plenty of flavor. Malty with high alcohol. A man’s beer. Some hop evident too. This was one of my two favorite beers at the 2007 RBSG, the other being Duclaw Devil’s Milk. With the staggering selection of outstanding brews available at the grand tasting, that’s saying something. Skyview (4007), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Jul 6, 2007 Picked up a 750 ml bottle at John’s Market Place in Portland, OR and bootlegged it back to RBSG ’07. Pours a dark reddish brown brew with a decent beige head that dissolves very slowly to a fine film. Aroma of smoky molasses, raisin, caramel, peat and brown sugar. Taste is thick, sweet and creamy with some roasted nut and dark chocolate character. Finish is sweet and some smoky caramael aftertaste. Man is this good. stefanje (937), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Jul 2, 2007 Updated: Apr 25, 2008From 750 ml bottle. Pours very dark brown with just a hint of red when held to a light. Aroma is black licorice and yeast. Head is big four fingered, and dissipates very slowly. Taste is anise, sweet molasses, roasted peanuts, moderate hops, and some dark bittersweet chocolate. Mouthfeel is award winning, very creamy, silky and smooth. Finish is long with some hops and more black licorice. I must have accidentally gotten into the Papal destined reserve because this is sacred, holy brew. Amen aobecksy (661), Middle of no where, Ohio, USA Jul 1, 2007 RBSG 07, dark red pour frothy head with thick lacing, nice scotch undertones in the nose. Tastes Chocolate and brown sugar with smooth alcohol warming. Nice drink, would be a great nightcap. grimreeser (795), Minnesota, USA Jun 28, 2007 Pours a dark dark brown with a smallish head. Aroma of molasses, chocolate, some smoke. Nice flavor, sweet but the hops are definately there. Nice full mouthfeel, heavy stuff. Guess you were right OG. PilsnerPeter (2585), Flushing, New York, USA Jun 28, 2007 Bottle: Pours a great color, like a ruby/purple and a khaki head. Huge aroma. Has a bit of everything. Lots of caramel malts, maple, peat, mint, berries, chocolate, wood and some resinous qualities. Dense mouth feel with a strong alcohol burn. Huge malt depth with earthy peat notes upfront. The alcohol warmth almost gives off a minty feeling. Tons of roasted caramel malts with a slight raisin flavor, smoked earth hints and a toffee-ish note later on, which leads to a slightly resinous warming finish. Very good stuff which has a ton of complexity, but I have to sample an older version to let it mellow out a bit. BDR (2139), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Jun 27, 2007 Sampled at the RBSG 07 Grand Tasting. Lots of malt on the nose of this with molasses sticking out a bite and a smoky character as well. Dark brown color with faint head. islay (470), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jun 26, 2007 Approximately 1.5 oz. sample at the Grand Tasting of the RateBeer Summer Gathering 2007 in the Twin Cities, MN on July 23, 2007. This was the seventh of 26 beers that I sampled and rated during the tasting. Apple juice, lemon, and honey aroma with a touch of hops and a slight hint of smoke. Pours a hazy, gold-tinted brown with beige head. Fruity, floral, yeasty flavor with a sharp, dry finish. I really wish that I had taken better notes on this one, because I remember that there were a lot of specific, interesting flavors, but apparently I failed to write them down. With all the other beers I tasted that night and the three intervening days, I can’t remember those specific flavors, and that bugs me. Oh well. I suppose it’s bound to happen when you are rating as many beers as I did that day. Anyway... Little aftertaste. Heavy body. AleSmith Wee Heavy Scotch Ale is a fine beer across the board.
