J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

750 ml bottle. Pours a very deep, nearly clear, ruby red with a thick, luscious light tan head that coated the glass beautifully all the way to the last sip. Lots of malt in the aroma along with some caramel, molasses and a hint of coffee. The flavor is again very malty with caramel, molasses and some very light coffee all present. Some light hops bitterness at the finish was a perfect compliment to the malt and caramel. The mouthfeel was full and silky. This beer coats the palate but is not cloying. Really excellent stuff. I’m glad I have a couple more bottles to put away to enjoy on another cool evening.

DEEP mahogany/reby color, almost opaque. Big creamy beige head that lasts forever. Aroma is VERY malty, and also smells of molases and caramel. Flavour is again, quite malty with a slight cognac type aftertaste, almost fruity, but malt at the same time. Finish is bitter, and extremely smooth, what a well made beer. A beautiful warmer to sit onthe couch, in a blanekt and sip all night.

Appearance: Pouring out dark, chestnut brown with a head reminiscent of frothed milk. Alright, this starts off my inaugeral AleSmith experience! Smell: Stongly sweet caramel malt aroma coupled with a limitless amount of peat and smoke. Touch of oak. Some dark fruits glazed in maple syrup. Taste: Starts off with a clean maltiness which blends effortlessly with the peat and dark fruit flavors. Again, a bit of oak in the equation. A bit like a nice tawny port. The hops, though present, are restrained and unobtrusive, allowing for the dark, wine-like fruits and sweetness to dominate (though, at no point is this beer overly sweet). A little time and warmth help to coax out some additional flavors of cocoa and toasted vanilla beans. A litte more time brings out some fusel qualities. Mouthfeel: Medium, and so very smooth. Drinkability: Quite so. I feel "very good" is an understatement. I think it’s an *outstanding* beer, and one I thoroughly recommend.

Clourdy, brown body with a medium sized, off-white head. The aroma is toffee, vinous, light roast and just a touch of cola. The flavor is sweet up front, lots of caramel and toffee, light sweet smoke, raisins and herbs. Medium/full body is soft with moderate carbonation and a rough, slightly astringent and warm finish.

2006 bottle pours a deep brown with hints of amber when held to the light. Smaller bubbly off white head that left some light lacing. Aroma of dark fruits, molassess, caramel, toasted malts, hints of smoke, almonds and hint sof honey. Flavor of cocoa, hints of smoke, latte, milk chocolate, some dark fruits, vanilla, nuts, very nice tasting Scotch Ale. Very smooth mouthfeel.

VVoVV, nose meet Wee Heavy> Awesome brew. Pours a murky dark amber. Great smell to it, a little smoky? with some malt. Taste is much of the same, with some caramel. Very good brew. :moneyL

The best scotch ale I’ve ever had. Poured a dark red with a good sized tan head that lasted. Aroma of sweet malt and hops. Mostly malt. Taste of sweet caramel malt with a hint of hops. Very smoothe and very sweet.

urs dark brown with small ivory head. Aroma is fairly weak with crystal and roasted malts coming through and some smoke. Flavor is pretty smokey throughout, caramel hits you first which then goes to the roasted malts, more chocolate as it withers away from your tongue with a big smokiness left in your mouth. This beer is smokier than I thought it would be although it goes well with the caramel and chocolate flavors and you can’t taste any hops. Big mouthfeel very chewy I had to really swish it on every sip and I kept smacking my tongue, it’s very lingering. Overall a very good example of the style.
