J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Delicious scotch ale here. Beautiful malt-filled nose with a bit of smoke and wood -- and booze. The taste is a bit flat but still quite delicious as said. Most impressive Alesmith offering yet.

Appears a dark, dense mahogany with a beige head that fades into a small cap and bubbly collar. Spotty lacing is left around the glass. Smell is of dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla, light smoke, banana flambe, and rum cake. Taste is of the same aromas with a standout of cocoa. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, warming, & laden with caramel, vanilla, toffee, and a light smokiness running along the palate.

Slightly hazy ruby body with a medium creamy light brown head. Sweet malty aroma, very sweet. Sweet caramel flavor with some dark malt.

750 ml. bottle. Rich, deep browiish red coloring. Inviting brown 1" head. Malty sweet, smoky, licorice-like scent. Similar notes in taste, but with deeper chocolate, molasses flavoring. Body is moderate but not empty and the flavor washes front to back and through the nostrils simultaneously. Some light hops but no sign of bitterness.

750 from footbalm. Dark brown with a short lived head.. Aroma is just loads of caramel. Some slightly roasted and smoke character. A ton of chocolate and caramel flavor. Smokey bitter finish. Palate is big and chewy. What a terrific beer.

Bottle; Nose is light with some roastiness, nutiness, and some caramel; clear transparent brown with a big, longlasting tan head; flavor of smokychocolate, plums, raisins, and a little alcohol in the medium body; the finish is some mild hop bitterness and some alcohol.

Wow..what else can I say than wow. This is an amazing beer, and scotch ale isn’t even a style I’ve ever been interested. Well Alesmith has made an awesome beer that is full bodied, loaded with flavor, and is a great beer to drink. This is a must try if you can get your hands on it

A bottle that I’ve been saving for about 6-8 months, alcohol unnoticable until I got half way through it. Much better flavor than I was expecting, not too sweet at all, there was plenty of dark fruit, but it was balanced out, maybe by alcohol? Some earth to it.. Damn I wish I tryed this sooner, one of my favorites from Alesmith! Great!
