J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

As a preface, I am not very familiar with “scotch style” ales, whatever that actually means. This had a very amazing chocolate and malty smell that only got better as the bottle got lower. The taste was malty and good but not alcoholic despite the high ABV. My friend said he tasted peat and smoke but I tasted no such thing and I feel cheated. This was still a pretty good beer. Damn you Alesmith!!! Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-05-2007 15:33:40

On tap at the OB noodle house. Dark brown pour with a reddish hue in the light. Aroma of caramels, brown sugar, dark fruits, and mild spices. Very smooth mouthfeel with a flavor that does not disappoint. Flavor of roasty carmel malts with sugary raisons and dark fruits. The finish is of wood and a hint of alcoholic warmth. A pretty damn good brew if you ask me

bottle that has been sitting for a few months poured a brown in color with some red highlights and a dark tan one finger head. aroma has rich dark fruit, raisin, rum, dark brown sugar, brown malt, and some chocolate covered coffee bean. mouth feel is fairly thick with a dark sugar coating and just enough carbonation. flavor is very rich, dark fruit, molasses, cherry, lightly roasted malt, peat, some bourbon soaked wood, and an interesting twang of chocolate. there is some alcohol heat but in a nice warming way. really luxurious and full of rich flavors, by far the best of this style i have tried.

Source: Bomber from KnB Glass: Bordeaux wine glass Appearance: Light brown/amber body with wispy light brown head. Aroma: Heavy on the molasses and caramel, with a hint of burnt malt. Flavor: Malty sweet, but not cloying. Again tons of molasses, and perhaps some chocolate and raisin. Palate: Very full body and nice mouthfeel. The alcohol is perceptable. Overall: Not my favorite style, but a good beer.

The flavor is quite fruity and malty upfront with tons of traits (my roommate said it was a FIST full of flavor), including fruits, raisins, prunes, esters, etc. There is a hint of alcohol with slight dryness, as well as a bitter-hinting finish perhaps from the hops, or perhaps from the malt; I’m honestly not sure. I walked away breathing a StarBurst type fruity sensation down my throat, but good

Bottle @ Blind Tiger. Not sure if there is better way of trying a new genre of beer. This beer is big and fully flavored, full of smoky flavor, malt, slight sugar and chocolate and hop notes, Alcohol is only evident in the slight warming. Nice.

Kristyn: Hmm… no, I’m pretty sure I haven’t had the Ale Smith Wee Heavy yet.
Eric: … ~faceplant~

Solid black, though not quite as thick and viscous as some, a gentle head of khaki fluff floats in suspended pockmarks above the black depths below. Lace sticks like algae to the sides of my glass, even as some tempting swirls release esters of spice and wood, dark pitted fruits, more spice, and ending with rum-soaked black earth. With the first sup, the top of my tongue tingles under a bright assault of flavors which I was not expecting. She immediately leaves a dry rub of spice and wood which continues to absorb the moisture in my mouth from start to finish. Her alcohol warmth soaks my breath even as wood tannins, vanilla root, and dried black cherries melt together in the cauldron of her palate. Make no doubt though, her palate is dry, spiced, and woody with a sprinkling of dry chocolates dominating. Her sweeter, softer side smoothes the rough edges with brown sugars and warm maple, all to brings my Alesmith Wee Heavy journey to a seductively drinkable conclusion.

An intriguing and very tasty balance between dry, sweet, warm, and spiced with the rich creamy malty center that characterizes the Scottish Wee Heavy. I haven’t ventured into too many Wee Heavies yet, but for the time-being, the Alesmith Wee Heavy is high on the list of exquisite delicacies.

Big thanks to Hopscotch for this....!!! Makes a perfect #600 for me... 750ml bottle poured into a big delirium snifter with plenty of room for the massive off tan 3 finger pillow head.... an absolute beauty.... dark and luscious. Aromas of dark fruit, sweet malt, and brown sugar... this is the one area that the beer could have delivered more for me - it just was not as powerful as I would have liked... I felt I needed to really seek out these aromas - but once I found them.... very nice. Big full body over the palate with a biting hop presence up front with extremely smooth sides... notes of raisin, plum, big juicy apple, brown sugar, sweet malts, and some lingering banana.... the finish is outstanding! A big burst of sharp bitterness up front with more spice on the sides and a splash of licorice throughout... a touch of alcohol lingers but doesn’t dominate the finish... Wee Heavy is a true beauty.... very excellent indeed.
