BeerPrince (1701), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada May 15, 2006 Nice brown bodywith an off-white/beige head. Aroma is rich sweet malts with a slight smokiness and nuts to go with a little chocolate and toffee. Dense malt flavour, some plum and date fruitiness with lots of chewy malts. A light alcohol presence with a little smokiness. mkgrenwel (420), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA May 11, 2006 Pours a rich, dark brown with a medium creamy tan head. Flavor is mostly smoked malt. Very smoky, almost meaty flavor. Reminds me of bacon and smoked gouda. Also has strong components of chocolate and fruit. Fruits involved seem to be cherry and cranberry. Very dry, particularly considering how malty the beer is. A bit tart and acidic. I’m not getting any of that alcohol that others found, but I haven’t tasted alcohol in anything for a while now. This has nice complexity with a very wide range of flavors, but they don’t quite come together all that well. Perhaps some aging would do this beer a lot of good. ghorsche (48), Berkeley, California, USA May 11, 2006 750ml bottle. Poured clear but daaaark (almost opaque) mahogany into a tulip with a medium, diminishing creamy tan head. Georgeous. Nose is coffee and dark fruits, nutty with an alcohol background. Very reminiscent of a stout, but a bit more vinous. Big bite up front, bitter toasty malts and alcohol. Verrrrry vinous flavor, lots of sweet dark fruits and some wood. Sweet finish with warming alcohol and some bitterness on the back end. Moderate, velvety-syrupy palate with a nice alcohol tingle. Reminds me a lot of Speedway Stout, actually, but fruitier and without the ridiculous acrid coffee. Quite nice. BCAR (216), Naperville, Illinois, USA May 9, 2006 Deep amber color. Clear garnet. Long-lasting beige head. Rich, strong and smokey nose with alcohol coming forward. Concentrated malt taste with smoke. Deep layers of malt with molasses sweetness to offset. Finish is long; first sweet then a little bitter. Bartzilla (441), San Diego, California, USA May 4, 2006 This ale took me from Ayatollah status straight down to lowly infidel with one glass. Then the second glass, well, let’s not talk about that. In any case, this is an excellent scotch ale. A definite treat to the taste buds and a force to be reckoned with. To say it’s a big beer is an understatement. To say this is the jihad and we’re just mere infidels, is about as spot-on as it gets. Emil (6075), Copenhagen, Denmark Apr 27, 2006 Bottle. Ruby colour with a big beige head. Roasted malty, licorice, dried fruits aroma andtaste. Medium to full body with a light sweet finish. chilehead (186), Laguna Niguel, California, USA Apr 25, 2006 Had on tap at brewery. Very dense and chewy with moderate roasted notes. A bit like a porter roast-wise but more subdued. Excellent broad malt profile, very rich and decadent. joergen (8429), Frederiksberg, Denmark Apr 23, 2006 Bottle.
