0o9i (326), Reno, Nevada, USA Apr 19, 2006 Updated: Nov 12, 2006Tap @ brewery. Ruby color with a tan head and lots of lace. Aroma is malty-caramel, with yeast, roastiness and alcohol blended beautifully. Body is medium with light foamy carb and DRY! (underlined, in caps, w/!). That’s DRY!, damnit. Malt: dark fruits with prune, alcohol, light sugar, roasted malt, grapefruit rind and a chocolate finish. Not like any scotch ale I’ve had. Peter says he doesn’t use the yeast you’re "supposed" to use and I think that made a difference. This stuff is awesome on the tap or out of the bottle. Bottled it was fruity, lightly roasty and smoothe, most drinkable warmed up a little from the fridge, but not at room temp. Delicious! Firemoose15 (540), Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 15, 2006 Bottle. Aroma chocolate and molasses nice roasty malts. Pour was a deep dark brown. Flavor was smoked chocolate and molasses a tinge of caramel as well. Palate was nice full and solid character. Overall this was frigging good. TURDFERGUSON (1594), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Apr 10, 2006 dark brown mohagany in color, smallish head with a white hue. wood, sweet smokey malts, molasses, scotch, cocoa dominate the aroma. flavor is initially very sweet with a lot of chocolate, a full body, and with a tinge of smokieness. The balance in this beer is just wonderful. None of the flavors dominate the others and it leaves a very pleasent taste on my tongue. Alcomohol is definitely present but not overwhelming either. Thick and chewy and oh so delectable. Havent found an alesmith i havent liked. Looking forwad to trying the rest of the fleet. MrRain (415), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA Apr 9, 2006 Bottle poured into a tulip glass. This beer pours a very dark amber color, letting nearly no light pass through. It’s head is large and cream and clings to the side of the glass very nicely. It’s a beautiful beer. It has a velvety feel in the mouth. I can taste butter and caramel. While swallowing the beer becomes very complex and hard to describe but quite delicious. Right as you think the swallow is done and you’re ready to think about the taste it has a nicely packaged suprise jolt of alcohol. All it needed was a red bow! winegarner (220), san diego, California, USA Apr 6, 2006 Poured a dark brown with a thin lightly tan head. Not very much carbonation to speak of. A hoppy chocolate flavor and aroma with very noticable fusel alcohols. Also very full bodied and sweet. I am having a hard time rating this because this beer seems as though it really needs a few years of aging. As a fresh product I feel any rating is premature. Maybe in three to five years I will re-rate. entertheiceman (242), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Apr 3, 2006 Absolutely beautiful pour brown, red and hints of orange on the edges with a thick lastin head. Obviously very malty aroma with an oh so slightly bitter astringency hop smell as well. KInd of like a candy bar in the mouth, not overly sweet at all, very earthy and yet smooth as can be. Really just a very complex malt body, caramel, roast, earth, and smoke. Truly a meal in a bottle. Dickinsonbeer (3434), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Mar 26, 2006 Updated: Apr 19, 2006Bottle shared @ spuyten Duyvil, thanks to beastiefan2k. Pours a slightly cloudy deep amber with a thin lasting head. Aroma has a slight oxidation, very complex sweet malt, light smoke and peat, hints of coffee and chocolate as well. Very sweet flavor but not cloying, lots of thick sweet bready malts, molasses, and just a hint of smoke in the end, which I thought would have been a bit nicer if the smoke was increased a bit. Nice sweet and thick mouthfeel and goes down smooth. 9% abv is hidden very well. ehhdayton (1113), USA Mar 23, 2006 The aroma is a pleasent combination of smokiness, caramel, and light hoppiness. The color is mahoggony with a tan head. The flavor has a caramel sweetness, with undertones of smokiness, chocolate, molasses, and some hop.
