J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bottle courtesy of daknole. I shared this bottle with a group of guys whose experience with beer ranged from aspiring beer geek to complete novice. It received rave reviews from all. It poured a pretty burgundy with a large, fluffy, beige head that left sticky lace in its wake. The nose was sweet, dark and malty with a light peat malt note. Full-bodied and creamy with a drying and mildly bitter finish. The flavor was a solid, round, sweet and lightly peaty malt with an earthy hop addition at the finish. This is a very nice beer in every regard and is very different yet nearly as satisfying as its barrel-aged version. It is definitely a beer that I won’t hesitate to stock-up on if I find the opportunity.

From bottle. Poured a beautiful dark mahogany. Creamy tan head. Aroma was smokey and creamy. Flavor was WOW. Truly. Soft and sweet up front with hints of caramel and roasted malts. And as you sat and sipped it, the hops and slight bitterness came out. This was a very well blended ale. I have no idea why I have waited so long to drink this, and this will definitely be a staple now in my cellar. We enjoyed this while sitting outside with friends watching a bonfire and it was the perfect fit for that. Even our non craft beer drinking friend enjoyed this.

Bottle at the “Drink for Charity” event at Rattle & Hum. Pours a clear brown with a thin white head. Smoke and caramel and a bit of sweet malt on the nose. Medium thick body, with malt and a bit of smoke. A bit of alcohol coming through. Finishes a bit sweet with some more roast. Solid.

Bottle (75 cl) from Ölbutikken, Copenhagen, Denmark. Shady mahogny with a rich creamy beige head. Rich malty aroma, with dark chocolate, dark fruits, plums, and unfortunately a touch of alcohol. Full bodied with very soft carbonation. Very well balanced, dry with moderate bitterness. Long chocolatey aftertaste. Would have preffered the alcohol to be tuned down a bit.
