Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned
J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Black tea color with a khaki head. Classic malty sweet earthy Scotch ale aromas with raisons, molasses, and a whiff of alcohol. Smooth, full body. Nice earthy sweet flavors of pears, plums, black raisons, molasses with a touch of smoke. Enjoyed this one.

750 ml bottle purchased mail order from South Bay in Imperial Bay, California. Not sure age on this, though I purchased it from Joey on the May 29th, 2007. I believe this was a fresh bottle when I purchased it. Pour is dark mahogany with a tan 2 inch head. As the head retreats, it reveals nice lacing. Pretty beer. Aroma of big caramel bitter sweetness. Some peaty earthiness in there as well. Powerful nose. Taste is peaty, bittersweet chocolate chips and yeasty. Smoky too. Aftertaste reveals some alcohol burn. Some sea-saltiness in the finish as well. Tasty beer, though not as rounded and complex as the Flyers 140 Schilling I recently tasted. Palate is medium to full, quite mouth coating.

I wish I had drank this in the winter instead of summer. It warms you all over. I would have pegged this at an ABV of 15-16% instead of ten. Aroma is heady with alcohol, vanilla, plums, earth, and chocolate. Very warming taste, alcohol explodes in mouth and warms you all the way to your toes. Vanilla, molasses, caramel, plums, hops all swirl for attention.

~Pours a nice red color (when held to light) with plenty of carbonation and thick creamy off white head. ~Very sweet malty aroma with alcohol and dark fruits. ~Sweet smoky malt flavor, caramel, raisin and wood. ~Full bodied, a bit chewy, alcohol tongue tingles. Great finish. Bitter and a tad salty. Alcohol leaves warming sensation throughout mouth. ~Very enjoyable. I wish this was easier for me to find in my area. I would love to try this on a cold winter night after a day on the mountain.

750mm bottle- pours a cloudy reddish brown color with a tan head. Aroma of caramel and brown sugar. Flavor is chocolate and some caramel and is quite warm to the palate. Chewiness was noted as this is not a timid beer. Once again Alesmith has delivered. Well done.

I actually had never had this until last night. $14; it better be good. Thankfully, it delivered in a major way. There are beers, and there are BIG beers, and this one is in the latter category by a landslide. Aroma is even thick, of molasses, cocoa, brown sugars, ash. Flavor demands a presence on the palate, almost chewy enough to eat. Very rich caramel malt profile with only a slight trace of peat (thank God). YUM!!
