J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

I have waited a long time to try this and I enjoyed it very much. I appreciate Skyview hauling it from the West Coast for the RBSG 07. Very malt in the aroma and flavor. Aroma also has roasted malt. Light fruit in the flavor, and some vinous character. I get some smoke, as well as fruit. A brown beer, fairly well carbonated. Thick and heavy, that is for sure. More of a roasted, malty scotch ale than some others I have had, but this was one of the highlights of RBSG.

Bottled at Sorbon, Bromma, Sweden. Generously shared by Baresi. Pours out in a clear dark reddish brown colour with a firm lasting tan-coloured foam. Rich malty aroma of peat, fudge, anise, milky chocolate and tobacco. Full-bodied and chewy with velvety deep malty notes of toffee, peat, tobacco, cocoa, almonds and figs. Long chewy malty finish of cocoa, caramel, mild smoke, nuts and anise. Great stuff in small quantities.

Bottle. Brown beer with an off-white/beige head. Rich sweet malt aroma with a slight smokiness to go with a little chocolate and toffee. Rich malt flavor, moderate smokiness, some plum and date fruitiness - but lots of chewy malts. Alight alcohol presence. There’s almost a Belgian quad complexity underneath everything else that remins me of a Rochefort 10 with richer malts.

The pour reveals a slightly cloudy brown color with floaties and thin light brown head. Excellent aroma of earthy malt and toffee. Excellent flavor of earthy and peated malt with toffee, burnt sugar?, hops, it finishes mildly bitter and dry. The alochol is noticeable but just enough to fit with the combo. The body is medium to full with a soft, pillowy texture and low carbonation. This is a superb scotch ale. Previous rating : 7/3/7/5/15 3.7 Brown color with a very thin head. Aroma of malt, caramel and alcohol. Flavor of malt, caramel and alcohol. Very full body, so full it feels chunky, slightly liquorous texture. It’s very good, but still i had higher expectations, maybe it’s a bad batch or something.

Bottled. Tnx Caesar. The aroma has yeast, caramel, raisins and some hops. Hazy, brown coloured beer with an off-white head. The taste is sweet with caramel, raisin, toffee. Good cmplex caramel flavours. Well balanced beer.

Pours with a small, creamy tight bubbled, light brown head. Very dark brown body that is cloudy after the second pour. Decent lacing and good retention. Aroma is yummy and has brown sugar, smoke, prunes, currants, pretty sweet and spicey in general. Wow, sweet taste that starts of with a nice strong, flavorful, malty wallop, followed by smokyness, then some slight nuttyness. Smooth mouthfeel with some warming too it on the back. Great Scotch Ale.

Dark mahogany color with a very thin light tan head that dissipated quickly. The aroma is luxurious malt, smoke, rum and butterscotch. Rich body with full flavors of smoked malt, floral hops, caramel, chocolate and roasted nuts. Amazing. The finish is creamy and smooth, with sweet malt and an alcohol pop. Right up there with any of the best Scotch Ales out there.
