J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

The pour reveals a slightly cloudy brown color with floaties and thin light brown head. Excellent aroma of earthy malt and toffee. Excellent flavor of earthy and peated malt with toffee, burnt sugar?, hops, it finishes mildly bitter and dry. The alochol is noticeable but just enough to fit with the combo. The body is medium to full with a soft, pillowy texture and low carbonation. This is a superb scotch ale. Previous rating : 7/3/7/5/15 3.7 Brown color with a very thin head. Aroma of malt, caramel and alcohol. Flavor of malt, caramel and alcohol. Very full body, so full it feels chunky, slightly liquorous texture. It’s very good, but still i had higher expectations, maybe it’s a bad batch or something.

Bottled. Tnx Caesar. The aroma has yeast, caramel, raisins and some hops. Hazy, brown coloured beer with an off-white head. The taste is sweet with caramel, raisin, toffee. Good cmplex caramel flavours. Well balanced beer.

Dark ruby body with a medium off-white head. That is indeed one heavy beer. Plenty of thick toffee and caramel. More fruity than usual for a scotch ale with raisin, plums, etc. Pleasantly not too sweet considering the style and abv. Thick creamy body with appropriate medium carbonation. 9.5% is apparent. Unfortunately hard to come by where I live. Too bad cause I can imagine myself drinking that stuff until the Wee Heavy makes me wee-wee heavily.

Dark mahogany color with a very thin light tan head that dissipated quickly. The aroma is luxurious malt, smoke, rum and butterscotch. Rich body with full flavors of smoked malt, floral hops, caramel, chocolate and roasted nuts. Amazing. The finish is creamy and smooth, with sweet malt and an alcohol pop. Right up there with any of the best Scotch Ales out there.

Aroma has loads of malt, hops and alcohol. Deep hazy brown, small toffee head. Flavour of strong malt, and hops combine pleasantly with the alcohol to warm You throughout. Well balanced. medium bodied, smooth. Fine example. Thanks Eyedrinkale.

This brew really brought my taste for scotch right into the flavor. Lots of scotch accents with a smokiness to the finish and heavy malty start that set this flavor apart, hints of chocolate and caramel within the layers of malt. Pours a deep red with a light tan head that leaves heavy lacing on the glass. Malty aroma with hints of dark fruit, caramel, and a scotch and smoke nose to it. Mouthfeel was rich and thick with a nice hop bittered balance that didn’t get in the way of the scotch flavors. Now if only i can get another bottle of this to age for a while, hmmm....

Sweet, dark, coffeeish and VERY malty! Quite a complex brew to ponder on a snowy night in Scotland over a rack of lamb dinner.

750. Huge, creamy, chewy, delicious beer. Pours opaque brown with a beautiful sudsy tan head. As usual, AleSmith’s tasting notes don’t steer you wrong; sweet malt, smoke, toffee and raisins on the nose, with chocolate, molasses, and smoke on the palate. The body is impeccably modulated, just showing real girth but not collapsing into syrup. There’s enough carb there to keep it something like refreshing--as refreshing as sips can be, anyway. Tons of flavor, completely satisfying.
These notes apply to an ’07, which gets a 6-4-6-4-12. 750, capped, thanks, Kim! Mild sweet caramel and CO2 nose. Dark brown body with amber highlights; thick foamy tan head. Light caramel and toast on the mid-palate. Clean light malt sugary finish.
