Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Sweet, dark, coffeeish and VERY malty! Quite a complex brew to ponder on a snowy night in Scotland over a rack of lamb dinner.

Aroma of chocolate, cinnamon, raisin, roasted malt etc. Pretty layered. Pours dark brown with red hues and a small tan head. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, sweet dried fruits such as plums and dates. Not alot of hops detectable really. Dry and smokey in the finish. Heavy mouthfeel. Lots of alcohol. Pretty good, but not really my style. Probably would not drink again, but I can appreciate how complex and good this beer is.

(Rating #2505)

Dark brown in the shadows; bright, ruby-red in front of a light. Light beige, creamy head; thin layer is lasting. Fresh, malty nose. Creamy-chewy texture is really nice. Rather malty-sweet and a little nutty-woody. Some chocolate as well. Malt flavors were stimulating. Hops chimed right in and seemed to keep up, though they never really hogged the stage. Mild smoke flavors, which I was happy about (not the biggest smoke fan here). Overall, intense fo' sure, but very drinkable and pleasant.

I finally got around to trying this one and my god was it worth the wait. I drank the whole bottle myself. Immense aroma, I think I sat there for a good ten minutes just smelling all the intensities coming out of the glass. Just a hint of smoke and vanilla, sweet honey and butterscotch, full rich mouthfeel, with some caramel and chocolate. This is the most delicious beer that I have had in ages.

750ml Bottle: Sweet aroma of toffee, caramel, malts, light toasting, brown sugar, light molasses, slight chocolate, and slight fig. Poured copper/amber/brown in color with a small, dense, tan head that diminished into a film on top of the beer that lasted throughout. Cloudy. Sparkling. Full of medium-sized particles throughout. Flavor is light to medium sweet. Tastes of caramel, malts, honey, maple syrup, light nuts, light chocolate, toffee, slight peat, slight smoke, and the slightest hint of alcohol. Medium to full body. Viscous, sticky, texture. Average carbonation. Sweet, chewy, caramel body coats the mouth. Almost like eating a caramel/toffee candy. Pretty darn amazing for the style.

Thanks to slikwily for the trade. Blackish Brown, tan head. Aroma of apples, pears, chocolate, and pine. Full and rich on the tongue. Flavors of coffee, walnuts, smoke, chocolate, and a hint of blueberry, maybe. Finishes with a slight alcohol burn and some oaky, woodsy flavors. Very tasty brew!

A very aproachable aroma with so many elements--wood, vanilla, rum?, and more. Slightly medicinal flavor but a good balance comes through. I loved the particular combinations of malts and big hops. Good red-brown color. An interesting and rewarding beer.
