| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 9, 2005 Dark burgundy color, with sticky white lace - powerful aroma of figs, plums, a little smoke and scotch whiskey - fruity up front, with dates, raisins and plums - later, chocolate, caramel and toffee make appearances - finishes with some alcohol warmth and lingering plum - aggressive, but not overpowering - very nice progression of flavor - well-balanced all around. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 13, 2004 Bottle pours dark brown with ruby hightlights. Medium tannish colored head, good lacing. Much darker than other Scottish Ales. Lovely aroma of figs, plums, oak, and a bit of alcohol as it warms. Flavor is intense, a large bouquet if you will: figs, plums, oak, dark cherries, molasses, some licorice and cola. This Scottish is hands down the most flavorful and complex one I've had. Finish is much same but with perhaps a bit of a vinous/vinegary tinge, mouthfeel is silky smooth. Warming finish, but the 9.5% is dangerously well hidden. By far the best Scottish Ale I have had to date. HIGHLY recommended. Thanks goes out to TChrome for the trade!

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 28, 2007 Bottle: Pours a great color, like a ruby/purple and a khaki head. Huge aroma. Has a bit of everything. Lots of caramel malts, maple, peat, mint, berries, chocolate, wood and some resinous qualities. Dense mouth feel with a strong alcohol burn. Huge malt depth with earthy peat notes upfront. The alcohol warmth almost gives off a minty feeling. Tons of roasted caramel malts with a slight raisin flavor, smoked earth hints and a toffee-ish note later on, which leads to a slightly resinous warming finish. Very good stuff which has a ton of complexity, but I have to sample an older version to let it mellow out a bit. puzzl (2660), New York, New York, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 5, 2006 Pours very deep brown with a really creamy head. Aroma is very malty and rich, with nice smokey notes. Palate is slitghly thin but still the flavor is so mouthfilling, smokey and delectable that it’s hardly a complaint. 10% alcohol is not noticed at all. An exquisite beer. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jun 22, 2002 Updated: Mar 13, 2004The beer disgorges from the 750ml green bottle a limpid deep ruby to almost brown color; the head is gargantuan in size, semi-creamy in texture and a toothsome light tan in color with the residual lace a velvet curtain to drape the glass. Nose is sweet malt, caramel and molasses, fresh and crisp, a pleasant sniff to be sure, start is demonstrative in its sweetness, thick malt presence, and the top is moderate to full in its feel to the palate. Finish has a fairish acidity, the hops relatively benign in their spiciness, the aftertaste droughty and a definite alcohol bitterness forms as the beer warms to the glass and room and it sticks to the palate till the very end. Alesmith has been since I sampled my first beer from them several years ago a favorite and I look forward to their vintages each year and keep a ton in my stash
