J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Appearance: Pouring out dark, chestnut brown with a head reminiscent of frothed milk. Alright, this starts off my inaugeral AleSmith experience! Smell: Stongly sweet caramel malt aroma coupled with a limitless amount of peat and smoke. Touch of oak. Some dark fruits glazed in maple syrup. Taste: Starts off with a clean maltiness which blends effortlessly with the peat and dark fruit flavors. Again, a bit of oak in the equation. A bit like a nice tawny port. The hops, though present, are restrained and unobtrusive, allowing for the dark, wine-like fruits and sweetness to dominate (though, at no point is this beer overly sweet). A little time and warmth help to coax out some additional flavors of cocoa and toasted vanilla beans. A litte more time brings out some fusel qualities. Mouthfeel: Medium, and so very smooth. Drinkability: Quite so. I feel "very good" is an understatement. I think it’s an *outstanding* beer, and one I thoroughly recommend.

Thanks MagicBill! AP: small particles. offwhite head that’s bubbly. Mahogany color. Decent lacing. Ar: Very much a scotch style aroma. F: One of the best scotch style ales I’ve ever had. I actually like this yet don’t normally like this style. Woody, scotchness. P: Dry in the mouth, sweet on the swallow. There’s a creamyness to it. Medium mouthfeel.

Raisin, chocolate, malt, alcohol, vanilla aroma. Chocolate brown cloudy, with thin off-white head. Medium oily body with light carbonation. Starts sweet with toffee, raisin, chocolate, and some coffee. Finish is silky vinuous, sweet toffee, vanilla, light chocolate. Good stuff.

750 ml bottle. A fruit plumb flavor along with the alcohol presence, Deep red body with off white head and some good lacing. Fruit flavors along with some creamy body texture took the alcohol aroma presence out of this one.. Smooth on the palate an enjoyable brew without the high alcohol being a factor.

Beer no. 35 at Bill and Steiny’s. A very malty aroma (expected). The taste has a little hops and isn’t too malty, thankfully. A good Scotch with tons of mouthfeel.

Hazy dark amber-brown in colour with a thin off-white head that seems to last a while. Aroma of peat, roasted malt and a good small fruityness, basically from pit fruit. Medium-bodied; Great sweet flavours with a smoked peat flavour throughout showing some good roasted malt bitterness as well. Aftertaste lasts a while and leaves the mouth sweet and smokey, a nice combination! I sampled this 75 cL bottle at the November RB party at Founder’s in Alexandria, Virginia on 20-November-2004.

Growler at O’Brien’s, San Diego, shared with a bunch of RateBeer locals - courtesy of OldNumbskull. Limpid ruby-brown with a wispy head - looks great in the glass. Aroma is sweet and malty, with a hint of tobacco and smoke. Flavour is nice and spicey (nutmeg, cinnamon), on top of a base of caramel and cocoa. Fantastic!

750ml bottle pours dark brown with ruby highlights and a creamy tan head that fades to a ring but clings to the sides of the glass. Aromas of smoke, caramel, toffee, some ripe fruits, and just a bit of chocolate. Beautiful full rich flavor, caramel, smoke, yeast, toffee, candy sugar, dark fruit, and a little vanilla. Quite complex and delicious. Palate is smooth and yet full and chewy. A delight to hold in the mouth. This is an absolutely wonderful brew..
