Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned
J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bottle. A dark brown to black color with an intense ruby glow through the light. Initial serving at 50.2 degress. Minimal to no head on the first pour, but a fine creamy brown head on a more vigorous second pour (quickly laced). Strong and noticeable alcohol in the aroma, wine, oak, toffee, raisins, and burnt caramel are also present. Rich caramel coats the palate, the alcohol warms, and the dark fruits finish strong in the aftertaste. A great palate - creamy, velvet, and smooth.

Bottled at Stockholm Beer Festival 2009. Dark brown color. Thick sweet, very raisiny and warming aroma. Sweet, raisiny and toffeish flavor. Nicely warming palate. Good dark fruit character. Very drinkable despite the strength and sweetness,

Deep dark brown, figgy, plummish, a tawny shade of crimson, not much of a head, slips away if it was there at all... rip dark fruit in the aroma, raisins and dates, more from the fig and plum, grapes, deep and resonant, complex and pungent... Full feeling on the palate, big flavor, cocoa maltiness, thick mouthfeel, return of the dark fruits in abundance, great tasting...I like it, though it doesn’t impress me too much. Nuttin’ wrong with that... ...wait how strong is this?...that strong, really?...it does stick out...maybe I’d like it better if the booze were a bit more quiet...nah, that doesn’t sound like me...anyway, good beer all y’all...enjoy...

Initial sample was at the brewery, notes and rating from bottle. Poured a ruby brown, with a nice light tan head slowly rising from the depths. Amazing aroma, with molasses, plums, smoke, alcohol, and dark chocolate, all in balance with each other. Could sniff this one all night (and did, considering it took me almost 5 hours to finish the bottle). Flavors were mostly centered around chocolate and a bit of smokiness, with faint plum in the background, and an alcohol finish. Not as complex and enticing as the aroma, but excellent nonetheless. Overt presence of alcohol on the finish keeps this one from being rated even higher. I don’t mind alcohol notes, but I felt that in this case it somewhat masked other, more interesting flavors.

2005 bottle. Roasty/chocolately aggressive "typical" scotch aroma. Hints of chocolate. Like I said, this is quite aromatic and pleasant. Hazy dark mahogany with an everlasting light tan head. Roasted and toasted bitter flavors to start with hints of chocolate, turning sweet and pleasant in the middle. Amazing body and mouthfeel. Thick and decadent. Another awesome job by the people at Alesmith. This beer is almost flawless. Alesmith has an uncanny knack when it comes to the body of its beers. A work of art.

10.31.04 750 bottle @ Heavyweight Openhouse thanks to Eyedrinkale. Clouded mahoganey pour with no head. This stuff is like a malt extract with a hint of smoke. Lots of booze, chocolate, caramel, peat in the background. Maris Otter is evident. Hops be damned. Full and creamy palate spreads the love around. What a treat, I could go for a bottle of my own!

Slightly viscous bronze body with a silky light tan head, delicate carbonation, and a heavy sheet of lace. Fruity malt aroma of raisins and cherries and some light roastiness. Vanilla and molasses elements come to the fore as it warms. Great roasty smoke and chocolate flavor plus some leather and maple syrup. Big malty body. I love this style and this beer in particular. Another stroke of genius from AleSmith. Thanks BigBastard!

Sampled at the RBSG 07 Grand Tasting. Lots of malt on the nose of this with molasses sticking out a bite and a smoky character as well. Dark brown color with faint head.
