Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned
J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Sampled at the RBSG 07 Grand Tasting. Lots of malt on the nose of this with molasses sticking out a bite and a smoky character as well. Dark brown color with faint head.

Courtesy of FlacoAlto. <P> Huge aroma features chocolate malt and dark sweet fruits. Color is dark ruby/brown with a thumb thick, creamy tan head. Molasses comes through first in the flavor then in quick procession there are wallops of dates, chocolate and caramel malts, stiff alcohol, raisins and dried plums and hints of caramelized sugar. AleSmith always impresses me by how well they go big without sacrificing complexity. This beer is big and bold and yet it is still subtle promising different flavor arrangements with every sip. A fantastic beer.

Along with the Poseidon, I would also like to rate this one on a fresh palate. Wee Heavy finished the night at Fort Wayne, topping off 12 hours of sampling at thedm's place! Red-brown appearance, with a thin, light, tan head. Slightly cloudy. Aroma was earthy and woody. Flavor was earthy malts, and I was surprised not to detect much "twigs 'n berries" subtlety in the finish. A nice, smooth drink, but not among my favorite Scottish Ales at this point in time. A retasting may be in store, just in case my palate was on the wane. Matt (thedm), Mike (bigbadbear63), Jim (flemdawg) and I were plenty sleepy after this brute!

Bottled. Deep amber coloured with a rather large off-white head. Malty with some sweetness. Notes of caramel, chocolate, syrup and a somewhat dry and hoppy finish.

Dark brown and cloudy in color with a nice tan head. Hoppy, dark fruity, caramel aroma. Fig, plums and roasty notes. Big flavor. Very good beer. Very malty flavor. Finish is fruity. Chewy. Full bodied. Very drinkable.

2001. Creamy, faded tan head. Sublime mixture of peated malt, charred sugars, and smoke underlain with fresh, slick fruitiness. Hints of dark grapes, almonds, perfume, phenols, and chocolate. Alcohol warms the tummy and the throat while the savory combination of sweet malts, approaching an English barleywine, thrusts into gear. An astounding rush of chocolatey complexity hits before a helping of charred sugars and smoke. Spicy alcohol, lavender, and lush, bready malts follow. Grainy, sugary finish and lively/velvety carbonation. A three year-old bottle of this nectar is a delicacy. (9,4,9,5,=16)

Post-Skip batches have taken a turn for the worse. No longer the beauty she once was.
