Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned
J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Deep reddish amber, fizzy beige head. Light smoke but mainly caramelized sugar, cookieish toasty malts. Medium bodied, sweetous, vinous. Peppery alcohol finish, not especially well hidden, but workable in a sipping beer of this sort.

Dark mahogany in colour, very clear first pour getting more muddy looking as you near the end of the bottle, thin beige coloured head, some lacing. The aroma is of rich malt sweetness, dark fruits, lots of plums, light smoke and some alcohol. The flavour is again rather plummy, some noticable bourbony alcohol, quite malty, some chocolate mint, lots of dark fruits. Warming mouthfeel, medium body, smooth carbonation. Finishes warming from all the alcohol but still incredibly smooth, seems to die off a bit to quickly though. This started of rather disappointing but I think that it was because of the cold bottle, got much better as it warmed up.

750ml bottle obtained in a trade with <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?U target=blank>Sven, thanks Steven.
Opened on April 15, 2007.
No best before date but I’ve had the bottle for at least 2 years.

Pours dark brown with a blood red tint and a small brown head. The aroma has lots of brown sugar, biscuits, rich chocolate, very toasted malt, candied malt balls and milk. Medium / full body with some fairly aggressive carbonation ~ a more mild carbonation feel would help considerably. The flavor starts off very similar to the aroma, then spice and a coffee-like bitterness enters. The finish has harsh bitterness and a bit of astringency. A quality scotch ale.

750ml bottle - Poured dark, reddish brown with a creamy, moderate sized head that left excellent lacing. The assertive aroma is a wonderful blend of yeast and malts with dark fruit notes. The intense flavor matches the aroma and throws in some coffee and chocolate notes in the dry finish. This ale has a big, full mouthfeel and little alcohol presence given the high ABV. It’s a truly excellent ale. The smiths have done it again.

Many thanks go out to JohnC who is truly a great and generous trader for providing this tasty brew! Another very well crafted gem from Alesmith! Deep brown with a beautiful red glow that comes through this one. Thin head of light brown. Complex aroma of caramel malts, butterscotch, some smoke, vanilla, and dark sugar. The flavor is sweet and deep with lots of caramel and toffee. Complex and smooth, wish I could get Alesmith here! Is there any style that Alesmith can’t brew well?

Aroma has some surprising complexity. Some toffee, apple butter and faint hop spiciness, with a barest hint of alcohol. Color is dark red-amber with a well-formed and lasting head. A very small, sparkly amount of effervescence adds to this beer’s overall attractiveness. Flavor profile is also very malty, with some caramel and toffee and a lightly roasty smokiness. A certain degree of sweetness exists throughout, but is tempered nicely by some spicy hop flavors. Body is on the heavy side of medium, with a satisfyingly long finish. Aftertaste has just a little alcohol as well, and overall I didn’t find it’s presence to be imposing or inappropriate. This beer, for being as big as it is, does possess a respectable amount of subtlety, I almost find myself groping for an apt description. Certainly my new favorite American version of this style. Scottish Ale as a style is underappreciated at times, I think. Not this one, though! Thank you so much, herb.

From bottle poured a deep dark brown body with a wispy tan head. Nutty, sweet, chewy aroma of dark fruits, premier grains, and caramel. Great thick, rich mouthfeel. Finished with appropriate spiciness and a thick rich coat on the tongue.

Bottle courtesy after4ever. It’s a perfect day for an IPA, and this bottle should be aged for a couple more years, but what the hell - I’m not going to encourage him to save the bottle for later. This is a big beer, the aroma starts with my glass still at arms length. Pours a nearly opaque reddish brown with a rocky tan head. The aroma is tootsie rolls, roasty chocolate and prunes. The body is full, lightly syrupy. The taste has the sweet toffee/molasses notes, along dried fruit and a bit of smoke. Nice clean finish.
