Very long earthy finish, like a good scotch ale should be. beerbill (1955), Laurel, New York, USA

Pours a very deep, nearly clear, ruby red with a thick, luscious light tan head that coated the glass beautifully all the way to the last sip. Lots of malt in the aroma along with some caramel, molasses and a hint of coffee. The flavor is again very malty with caramel, molasses and some very light coffee all present. Some light hops bitterness at the finish was a perfect compliment to the malt and caramel. The mouthfeel was full and silky. This beer coats the palate but is not cloying. Really excellent stuff. I’m glad I have a couple more bottles to put away to enjoy on another cool evening. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 20, 2005 750 ml bottle. Great stuff. Poured dark brown with very little head, and consequently very little lacing. Aromas of caramel, molassas, and other malts. Flavors were greater with chocolate, coffee, and more delicious roastiness. Alcohol flavors as well. Yummy Yummy. scraff (1942), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Apr 26, 2004 Thanks to tidiaguy for sharing at Continents Collide 2. This was intense for sure. Dark crimson and browns, small off white head. Deep lush notes of prune, fig, toffee, caramel, chocolate, and peat smoke. Taste incorporates all of the above, with hops showing a bit throughout, but never stealing the malts thunder. Full bodied, rich, smooth, chewy finish. So good!! | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 22, 2004 Red-orange and very cloudy, an amazing amount of particles. Interestingly, it wasn’t big chunks, just pieces of particulate matter evenly suspended throughout the glass. Nose smoky and peaty, a bit sweet. Flavor has a great initial fruit burst, then big peat, maple syrup, and smoke, bit of whiskey and hops at the end. A great scotch ale. MrRomero (1934), Nolanville, Texas, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 24, 2003 2001 bottle. Poured with a medium off white head initially which diminished quickly to a very thin lasting head. Color is dark caramel brown. Aroma is very malty. Taste is malty as well with a slight smokiness and flavor of raisins and dates. Mildly alcoholic finish. Thanks to TAR. An excellent brew. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jan 13, 2006 Rating No. 1200. Opulent cherry-brass in color with a creamy, bubbly tan wrung for the head, leaving lovely beady lace on the thistle as we go. Aroma is laden with rich complexities. Peat, nearly bourbon, chocolate, pecans and liquefied brown sugar. Vivacious indeed. Additional wafts reveal hints of natural vanilla extract, toffee, woodsy elements and hazelnut truffles. Flavor? Absolutely. Creamy, sullen smoothness settles in with a nutty chocolate sense, with the key contributors being dry milk chocolate, honey roasted pecans and caramel-laden, buttery praline cloisters. Further flavor revelations play a romantic rendition of walnut furniture that has been brazen by candle flame, which once served as mood lighting for the evening. Tingly, warming butterscotch character sonorously echoes like hot buttered rum. Thick, palatable, and an overall oozing wonder on the palate. Perfectly balanced, with a chewy malt composure and the finest levels of carbonation known to craft brewing. Finishes with chocolate covered caramelized pecans and a touch of peat. Stunning craftsmanship. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA

Flavor matches the aroma with notes of vanilla (oak) and has a small hint of smoke. Smooth, complex and easy to drink. I’m flying through this glass! Easily the best Scotch Ale I’ve had.
