Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

750 ml bottle. Great stuff. Poured dark brown with very little head, and consequently very little lacing. Aromas of caramel, molassas, and other malts. Flavors were greater with chocolate, coffee, and more delicious roastiness. Alcohol flavors as well. Yummy Yummy.

Red-orange and very cloudy, an amazing amount of particles. Interestingly, it wasn’t big chunks, just pieces of particulate matter evenly suspended throughout the glass. Nose smoky and peaty, a bit sweet. Flavor has a great initial fruit burst, then big peat, maple syrup, and smoke, bit of whiskey and hops at the end. A great scotch ale.

Entered from old notes. Bottle, split with muenster and NachlamSie. Pours garnet with thin tan head. The aroma is smokey and woody with a good deal of cake and raisin. The flavor is burnt sugar, wood, sap, and raisin. It leaves a somewhat smokey finish with caramel and molasses sweetness. The aftertaste is quite oaky. Well-rounded roasted barley character throughout. The alcohol becomes noticeable eventually.

Dark reddish brown body with a small head. Aroma is chocolate, caramel, hints of oak. Flavor matches the aroma with notes of vanilla (oak) and has a small hint of smoke. Smooth, complex and easy to drink. I’m flying through this glass! Easily the best Scotch Ale I’ve had.

2001 bottle. Poured with a medium off white head initially which diminished quickly to a very thin lasting head. Color is dark caramel brown. Aroma is very malty. Taste is malty as well with a slight smokiness and flavor of raisins and dates. Mildly alcoholic finish. Thanks to TAR. An excellent brew.

Rating No. 1200. Opulent cherry-brass in color with a creamy, bubbly tan wrung for the head, leaving lovely beady lace on the thistle as we go. Aroma is laden with rich complexities. Peat, nearly bourbon, chocolate, pecans and liquefied brown sugar. Vivacious indeed. Additional wafts reveal hints of natural vanilla extract, toffee, woodsy elements and hazelnut truffles. Flavor? Absolutely. Creamy, sullen smoothness settles in with a nutty chocolate sense, with the key contributors being dry milk chocolate, honey roasted pecans and caramel-laden, buttery praline cloisters. Further flavor revelations play a romantic rendition of walnut furniture that has been brazen by candle flame, which once served as mood lighting for the evening. Tingly, warming butterscotch character sonorously echoes like hot buttered rum. Thick, palatable, and an overall oozing wonder on the palate. Perfectly balanced, with a chewy malt composure and the finest levels of carbonation known to craft brewing. Finishes with chocolate covered caramelized pecans and a touch of peat. Stunning craftsmanship.

Black tea color with a khaki head. Classic malty sweet earthy Scotch ale aromas with raisons, molasses, and a whiff of alcohol. Smooth, full body. Nice earthy sweet flavors of pears, plums, black raisons, molasses with a touch of smoke. Enjoyed this one.
