J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bottle sampled with Beerded_one. Pours dark with a decent size light tan head. Aroma of alcohol, slight roast, slightly smokey, molasses, and dark fruit. The flavor is smooth, smokey, dark fruit, slightly sweet up front, molasses, and a nice alcohol finish. Good body, great brew.

750mL bottle, no date, acquired from ABUSEDGOAT. Pours a hazy dark ruby with a slowly fading two finger creamy light beige head. Aroma of light smoke, toasty malts, a little nuts, chocolate, oak/vanilla, and some alcohol. The alcohol is much more apparent in the taste. Very sweet with molasses and brown sugar, though towards the end it gets moderately bitter with some earthiness, and goes into a dry, lingering bitter finish. Other aromas show up in the flavors as well. Full bodied, light-moderate carbonation. Quite nice.

Dark reddish brown appearance, good head formation. Strong, dark fruit aroma, prunes, raisins, brown sugar, pretty much all malt. Sweet, slight;y chewy palate, very fruity raisin bread, caramel malt, toffeeish, dry woodiness and mild spice. Sugary flavor noticeable as is the elevated alcohol level, albeit unobtrusive.

What a fine scotch ale this is! Smoky and alcohol laden...with notes of peat, chocolate and molasses. Some dried fruitiness rolling around in the background, like dates and plums. Very vinous texture and possesing a malt chewiness that I find very enjoyable. The perfect beer to enjoy with a fine cigar!

The celebratory almost-done-with college beverage. The liquid is delicious looking cloud of tree bark, fringed with sunset orange and red. A thin line of ivory head rims the glass, a few bubbles percolate to the surface. Aroma is strikingly deep and rich, with sherry and raisins, rounded with frothed whipping creme touched with a half a vanilla bean and a cup of baking sugar. A gentle rounded bourbon warms the background of the aroma. Flavor is rich complex malt, mixed with a creme brulee topped with some shaved dark chocolate. A hint of grain and oats, and a quick waft of earthy fruit. Palate is clean and a touch dry, but leaves a cloying brown sugar coating and a smack of light euro hops. An extremely well balanced beer, with deft flavors and gentle tones. Alcohol is a tinge hot. The upper level of hops is an appreciated aspect of this particular brew.

Pours a dark brown with little to no head. Kind of syrupy looking. Smells of chocolate and caramel like most scotch ales. Taste is pretty sweet with some vanilla and caramel, with hints of chocolate, and a light spiciness to it. Kind of tastes like a tootsie roll. alcohol is prevalant. Very sweet malts and roasted nuts towards the finish. Very nicely done, probably thebest scotch ale Ive ever had.

Mahogany. Mellow aroma but still enjoyable. Hints of smoke, wood, peat, alcohol, molasses, burnt caramel and heavily toasted malts. The malts provide the beer with a subtle smokiness in the backround and notes of wood, prunes, raisins, toffee, grape, chocolate and caramel. Obviously this beer is more malt accentuated but the hop bitterness is this on the finish. I like it but it’s nothing compared to the others.
