J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Nice thick, light tan head of fine dense bubbles. Settles slowly and very nicely. Light carbonation. Awesome rich aroma. Caramel, prunes, peat, raisins and a load of malt. My goodness there is a lot of stuff in there. Color is a very dark mahagony brown. Big alcohol punch. Loaded with plenty of chewy malts, peat and smoke. Just the way a great scotch ale should be. Some vinuous and oak notes in there also. Flavors become more complex as the brew warms. And warms it does, way down inside from the generous alcohol content. Finish is creamy and slightly smokey. A wonderful scotch ale and one that should be savored. Thanks TAR! A great big thanks to TAR for this gem amongst gems.

Rerate: Newer bottles just don’t have the peaty, earthy depth, and are more sweet than the 2001 bottles. Original: Rerate 2001 bottle, shared with Hey_K and Frank - yes, deeply malty and with very handleable diacetyl, not too much alcohol in nose or flavor, intensely woody, but not sharp like oak, more mapley - delicious. Up from 4.2 to much more. Stored with great care for 2 years. Original: 4/21/02 - 2000 Bottle: Top notch. Rich maltiness, deep, chewy is absolutely right. Like I’m climbing Ben freakin’ Nevis.

Butterscotch nose with a dark iced tea body with a dense lasting head. Caramel sweetness, husky, honey, very light smoke, brown sugar. Very nice.

Excellent. Rich garnet color with tan head. Nose of toffee, malt, toast. Rich mouthfeel. Flavor was sweet and complex and enjoyable. Hints of Scotch whiskey. Gotta love this one.

Bottle from Styles. Brownish color. Slightly off-white head. Fairly malty in aroma although not as much as I would have liked. A little smokey. Medium bodied and the alcohol seems up front to me. Flavor of rich malt, a bit of chocolate and smoke. Decent but I would prefer the Founders Scotch over this.

2006 bottle purchased at Baskets in Cincinnati, OH. Consumed at 50 degrees. Pours a beautiful transclucent mahogany with a tan head. Aroma of brown sugar, malt, and dark dried fruits. Medium bodied with nice organic texture. Intial flavor of caramelized sugars, raisen, and tobacco countered by a balancing bitterness. Finish is dusty, yeasty, with some subtle notes of peat. The alcohol comes out as well, but does not distract and warms the wind pipe. This is a stellar example of a Wee Heavy, and probably one of the strongest I have had. Yet another great beer from Alesmith. Peter can do no wrong

Clourdy, brown body with a medium sized, off-white head. The aroma is toffee, vinous, light roast and just a touch of cola. The flavor is sweet up front, lots of caramel and toffee, light sweet smoke, raisins and herbs. Medium/full body is soft with moderate carbonation and a rough, slightly astringent and warm finish.

Aged 6 months. Pours dark brown into a tulip. Significant conglomerate head slowly recedes with large carb hugging the rim. Alcohol and roasted caramel notes. Full bodied and creamy with upfront smoked coffee, chocolate and caramel syrup and a lasting slightly bittersmoke finish.
