J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Aged 6 months. Pours dark brown into a tulip. Significant conglomerate head slowly recedes with large carb hugging the rim. Alcohol and roasted caramel notes. Full bodied and creamy with upfront smoked coffee, chocolate and caramel syrup and a lasting slightly bittersmoke finish.

750 from footbalm. Dark brown with a short lived head.. Aroma is just loads of caramel. Some slightly roasted and smoke character. A ton of chocolate and caramel flavor. Smokey bitter finish. Palate is big and chewy. What a terrific beer.

Wow, this is a godlike beer. Had a moderately aged bottle which I decided to tuck into. Lovely deep brown/amber body with a smallish head. The aroma is huge and complex, giving you a sense of how rich and multi-faceted this one is. Dark malts, dried fruits, a wee bit of hops, and a few chocolate notes to give it real smoothness. Truly exceptional work from Alesmith.

Nice dark copper color with a good head. Bready aroma. Fine malt taste with a sharp alcoholic sting. Bread, roasty finish. Alc is a little much.

The Dan Journal #309. Tasted 10/3/09. 750ml bottle. Filtered with a dark maple amber hue. Webbed off-white head. Aromas of raisins and spices. Nutty and doughy. Very nice nose. Full bodied and sweet and spicy. Sticky. Wonderful complexity. Flavors of raisins and port. Vanilla and graham crackers. Mild caramel note. Good bitter finish. Rolling and complex palate. Very well done! Great drinking!

Dark red body, off-white head. Big malty flavor - wood, yeast and dark fruit. Chocolately finish. Sweet, woody malty aroma. Rich, creamy mouthfeel. Thanks Jason for shaing this malty mofo!

I had the pleasure of enjoying the 2001. A nice dark cherry color with a nice mist of smokiness. A nice mixture of carmel/chocolate. Strong all the way through and finish smooth while remaining quite bold. A very impressive brew, very impressive.

Bottle RBSG ’07. Malty nose with the promise of higher alcohol. Nice, hazy dark brownish amber. Thin, yellowish tan head. Plenty of flavor. Malty with high alcohol. A man’s beer. Some hop evident too. This was one of my two favorite beers at the 2007 RBSG, the other being Duclaw Devil’s Milk. With the staggering selection of outstanding brews available at the grand tasting, that’s saying something.
