J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Reddish brown of color with a nice beige head. An aroma of chocolate, raisins and caramel. A flavor of chocolate, malt and weak bitter notes. A nice beer!

Dark red body, off-white head. Big malty flavor - wood, yeast and dark fruit. Chocolately finish. Sweet, woody malty aroma. Rich, creamy mouthfeel. Thanks Jason for shaing this malty mofo!

I had the pleasure of enjoying the 2001. A nice dark cherry color with a nice mist of smokiness. A nice mixture of carmel/chocolate. Strong all the way through and finish smooth while remaining quite bold. A very impressive brew, very impressive.

Bottle RBSG ’07. Malty nose with the promise of higher alcohol. Nice, hazy dark brownish amber. Thin, yellowish tan head. Plenty of flavor. Malty with high alcohol. A man’s beer. Some hop evident too. This was one of my two favorite beers at the 2007 RBSG, the other being Duclaw Devil’s Milk. With the staggering selection of outstanding brews available at the grand tasting, that’s saying something.

Bottle. Rating no. 1700. Dark reddish brown body with a medium beige head. The aroma is chocolate, hops, barley malt, caramel and tons of toffee. The flavour is lots of dark fruit, dried fruit, toffee, chocolate, caramel and vanilla. Very complex but still balanced. Creamy texture. I could sip this for hours. Great beer.

Bottle: Dark ruby pour with a big, creamy biege head. Good lacing. Nose is malty and of sweet, dark fruit. Taste is dark fruits, malty, caramel, and winelike. Some woodiness present. Very enjoyable scotch ale, thanks padrefan98 for sending this in trade.

pours out brown colored, with a small head. a typical alesmith, with little co2. flavor is smooth, malty, and sweet. this is a very good beer, even though i am not big on the style, this beer blew away my expectations. the best scotch ale, period.

I had this the night before my wedding so I’m not sure, could have been some butterflies that cast a shadow on this... It felt like a bright mild, with a complexity that seemed like it turned a wrong corner -- possibly some heat damage? Dunno. Noted was the sparkle in the glass. Anyway, it was not nearly as aromatic as other Alesmith brews I’ve had and had more pepper and peat in the back than smoke. Delicious with reservations.
