J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Almost opaque deep brown. Honest light brown head becomes a ring. Big malty aroma, no compromise. You can feel it in your bones that this is a scotch ale, caramel and toffee in abundance. Almost smoky at times. Close to flowery hops. Terrific blending and mutual flavor completion. Just a light alcohol hint in mid-mouth. In mouth, simply put, the beer tastes good. It has everything you wish your scotch ale to have while never being too sweet thanks to a generous (but restrained) hop profile, somehow grassy. Hints of candy, cream, coffee, chocolate. Fantastic creamy mouthfeel, rocking smoothness, this is an easy 5 for texture with so soft carbonation... Awesome, even with just a few months of age. Cheers rodolito! </br> Resample: Same 2004 vintage, but wondering if it's the same batch. This bottle tastes alcohol a lot, is much more vinous, brandy-liqueur like with tartish grapes notes, far less complex and a disappointment. I'd give this 3.7-3.8. Lowering the score to 4.3 from 9/4/10/5/18=4.6

No#15. This is my first alesmith so looking forward to it. Aroma is reaosnably fruity with a nice balanced sweetness. Taste is quite different with malt and some bittering hops making for an excellent little beer.

Re-rate 3/29/04 2001 bottle: Aged magnificently. Plenty of sweet complex caramel malt flavor and great balance of peat and hops, with a touch of chocolate toward the finish. Semi-dry, mildly oxidized conclusion to a taste bud jubilee. This is a wonderfully brewed Scottish ale!

5/4/2003: 2001 version, Pours a dark murky brown with a full creamy laced head. Thick, complex, caramel and peat malty aroma with good hop balance and some dark fruits. Smooth, sweet full-bodied ale finishes crisp, dry, and almost chocolatey. Alcohol is evident but pretty well hidden. A wonderful Scotch ale.

Bottle...This beer rocks!... Malty, yeasty and lightly smokey. Notes of sherry, oak and light alcohol. Sparkling clear burnt amber hue. Off-white, medium sized creamy head. Excellent lacing. Fully lasting. Malty, yeasty, lightly sweet and lightly bitter up front. Alcohol and hops blast the senses while almost covering notes of prunes and dark fruits on the backside. Full-bodied. Lively carbonation with a creamy mouthfeel. Long, satisfyingly bitter, pungent and dry in the finish. This scotch ale is for everyone... maltheads and hopheads alike. Thanks go out to herbjones for this one. My favorite beer!

Bottle. Really lovely stuff. Drier than most scottish style ales i’ve had, but thats not necesarily a bad thing. Some light sweet caramel and vanilla in the start, with some licorice and roasted malt towards the end. Slight tart bitterness in the finish, extremely tasty stuff, i want more. MASSIVE THANKS TO CLARKVV. Glad i got the chance to share it with everyone at the Low Countries Gathering.

750ml bottle–pours a retaining light brown head and deep red/copper color. Aroma is medium/dark malt-chocolate/molasses, dark fruit-cherry/raisin, earthy. ASA meets Scotch ale. Taste is initially alcohol, bitter then dark malt-chocolate/molasses/bready, dark fruit-cherry/raisin, earthy. Hops as it moves to cellar temp, taste improves…nope. Thanks to Joe-jwc215 for sharing.
