J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bottle thanks to the great blutt59. Pours a dark brown, ruby hues, tan head. Aroma of nice dark roast, some cocoa, great smell! Flavor is very good, tasty, dark roast, coffee, chocolate. Mouth feel is medium-heavy body with medium-high carbonation. Overall, VERY good shit!!!

[Spring 08 Bottle] Pours clear but thick very dark near black brown with a lovely gray frothy foam. Rich aroma, caramel malt, peat, some woodiness. First taste of sweet rich cotton-candy, butterscotch candy, lightly peaty, some faded pacific NW hops, rich burnt caramel, touch of smoke. Finishes with light chocolate and peated malted barley. Fantastic mouthful, medium/full but so soft and fluffy! Great aftertaste, leaves the checks puckered in from the bitter dry woodiness. Definitely a fan. [Ha! for my 800th rating I was played BagPipe music... fitting for my Scotch Ale!]

Very subtle, Glenmorangie-like smoke in the aroma. Super rich malty sweet flavor.

A big full on malty ride. Dark brown in color, tan head. Sweet all the way, nice aroma of brown sugar, molasses, caramel, and even a bit of rum. Full flavored, sweet and malty with a bit of booze. Full bodied, light warming. Very nice, thanks eyedrinkale.

Rich mahogany brown w/ creamy almond head. Sweet, lush nose of carmel, toffee, & nougat w/ light smoky, woody notes. Thick, viscous feel. Sweet, rounded, malty flavour w/ elements of smoke & wood. Big, warming finish.

750 ml bottle thanks to Padrefan98 from a trade several months ago. Pours a deep drk chestnut brown with slight red hues on the edges and a huge thick frothy light beige head. Big time boozy aroma with notes of raisins, dark fruit, slight peat, figs and sugar. Medium to full bodied mouthfeel with a creamy alcohol finish. Flavor of alcohol, dark fruit, alcohol, malts and alcohol. I think I might be banned from the site but Alesmith has yet to impress me. I have tried several different beers from them and most seem to be average t best and not this God type elixir that most people rate them.

25.4 oz bottle, cellared 18 months. A deep but clear blood red with edgy tan froth. Concord grapes, peat, raisins and almond brittle. Smells incredible. Medium body with the barest hints of carb. Tastes like scotch at first, then coconut milk?, vanilla and toffee. Light drying with a tang. Immediately soothing; a fine sipper. I’d like to try a fresh one.

Far and away the best scotch ale I’ve had. Caramel, toffee, nuts, a hint of chocolate. A nice hop kick in the finish to complement the well hidden alcohol. I’ve never been a huge fun of Scotch ales, but I could drink this on a regular basis. Now only if I could find it somewhere. Thank you hopsrus.
