Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Very subtle, Glenmorangie-like smoke in the aroma. Super rich malty sweet flavor.

750ml Bottle, 2005. Pours a nice black color with a foamy light tan head. Nose is a malty, chocolate, light roast and nuts. Taste is very malty, quite a bit of chocolate and a nuttiness.Roastiness appears and leads to a nice light alcohol warming. Feels very smooth and pleasant on the palate and finishes with a bitterness to wake you up from the soothing features on the tongue.

25.4 oz bottle, cellared 18 months. A deep but clear blood red with edgy tan froth. Concord grapes, peat, raisins and almond brittle. Smells incredible. Medium body with the barest hints of carb. Tastes like scotch at first, then coconut milk?, vanilla and toffee. Light drying with a tang. Immediately soothing; a fine sipper. I’d like to try a fresh one.

A big full on malty ride. Dark brown in color, tan head. Sweet all the way, nice aroma of brown sugar, molasses, caramel, and even a bit of rum. Full flavored, sweet and malty with a bit of booze. Full bodied, light warming. Very nice, thanks eyedrinkale.

Rich mahogany brown w/ creamy almond head. Sweet, lush nose of carmel, toffee, & nougat w/ light smoky, woody notes. Thick, viscous feel. Sweet, rounded, malty flavour w/ elements of smoke & wood. Big, warming finish.

75cl bottle. Dark brown with a beige head. Malty-sweet aroma with caramel, dried fruits, smoke, and nuts. The flavor is intense, with caramel, dries fruit, smoky earth, and just tons of malt. there are hops there, but good luck trying to pick them out. Full body with medium carbonation with small bubbles. Really good stuff. A quite refined sipping beverage. The balance makes it very drinkable for it’s strength. Only marginal alcohol is detected, though you feel it if you drink to fast.

Far and away the best scotch ale I’ve had. Caramel, toffee, nuts, a hint of chocolate. A nice hop kick in the finish to complement the well hidden alcohol. I’ve never been a huge fun of Scotch ales, but I could drink this on a regular basis. Now only if I could find it somewhere. Thank you hopsrus.

Pours rich amber brown color w/ a bad comedian that only gets a small, shortlived rise from the frothy crowd. The poor guy is left w/ just a thin ring of followers. Aroma of sweet malty dark fruits w/ a mild coffee roast. Superfull nectar w/ lazy residual effers creates slightly creamy texture. Malt man malt man thick and sticky malt man. A sweet old fellow. Caramel, roasted coffee bean, cocoa, plum, and cherry flavors persist to the finish riding alongside a barrel full-o-hops. Robo Hop passes by and punches Malt Man in the belly then runs off. The friction leaves a light smokiness in the air and pushes up a few nuances of iodine and leather. The finish is long and sweet w/ a defined citrus rind component that digs in. A creamed, sweet coffee essence kicks in at this point then dissappears just as quickly. Overall: This beer is decadent, fat and soupy w/ a balancing hop act. Alcohol is well hidden. Highly recommended.
