Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned
J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

The bottle doesn’t say "J.P. Gray’s", but this is their Wee Heavy. Opaque dark red/brown with a beige, thin but lasting head. Aroma of sweet, fruity chocolate and coffee. Also hints of higher alcohols. Complex flavour including coffee, chocolate, raisin, nut and currant. Perfect balance of residual sweetness and hops bitterness. Full bodied with a very warm alcohol feel.

DEEP mahogany/reby color, almost opaque. Big creamy beige head that lasts forever. Aroma is VERY malty, and also smells of molases and caramel. Flavour is again, quite malty with a slight cognac type aftertaste, almost fruity, but malt at the same time. Finish is bitter, and extremely smooth, what a well made beer. A beautiful warmer to sit onthe couch, in a blanekt and sip all night.

Source:750 mL bottle purchased at Anderson’s in Toledo.
Glass:Fuller’s Snifter.
Appearance:Deep mahogany pour with a two finger creamy, beige head that lingered.
Aroma:Almonds, butterscotch, heavy caramel, toffee and a touch of alcohol.
Flavor:Milk chocolate, toffee, caramel, dark fruits (figs) with a hint of warming alcohol on the end. Mild bitter finish.
Palate:Medium/full body with mild carbonation.
Overall:Aroma is excellent but the flavor doesn’t carry over the rich candy nose. The alcohol is well hidden. Excellent beer.

Dark brown with a small, dense, tan head. Nose of rich, roasty malt, smoke, peat, earth, sweetness, and subtle alcohol. Flavor adds caramel/toffee, pine trees (the whole tree),and some almost doughy yeast. Full, smooth, soft palate. Excellent. Who’s got my barrel aged bottle?

Bottle: Lite smoke, chocolate, coffee, whiskey, ABV sneaks in. Clear amber, meybe best amber I've seen, Brownish red. Small head. Flavor is ABV first then a roasted malt bitter hops duo. Creamy, smokey, bitter, thinner than I was expecting. Warming, kinda barley wine ish. The Abv was almost all in the flavor, didn't get in the nose or finish. Wish I had one to age, was a liitle young overall.

750 ml bottle courtesy of Secret Santa 2006. Pours a grainy dark sandy brown color with a small beige head. Aroma has slightly burnt caramel and toffee as well as dark fruit/dates,roasted malt and hints of faint chocolate and even bourbon !! Flavor is smoky malt and caramel with slight bourbon overtones. Leaves a small tobacco aftertaste. Another excellent concoction from that San Diego brewery. Thanks again Santa !!

The flavor is quite fruity and malty upfront with tons of traits (my roommate said it was a FIST full of flavor), including fruits, raisins, prunes, esters, etc. There is a hint of alcohol with slight dryness, as well as a bitter-hinting finish perhaps from the hops, or perhaps from the malt; I’m honestly not sure. I walked away breathing a StarBurst type fruity sensation down my throat, but good

brown colour, off white head. aroma of sugary malt, chocolate, fudge, light smoke and a hint of dried cherry. smooth mouthfeel. flavour has tart date and raisin notes with fainter chocoate and very little bitterness(a good thing for the style I guess). well done.
