J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

brown colour, off white head. aroma of sugary malt, chocolate, fudge, light smoke and a hint of dried cherry. smooth mouthfeel. flavour has tart date and raisin notes with fainter chocoate and very little bitterness(a good thing for the style I guess). well done.

750 ml bottle - pours deep brown with slight haze; cream colored head settles to the edges; aromas are rich and thick with level of sweetness; malty, dates and candy; texture is just a delight; thick malty backbone and sweet aftertaste; this is a great beer and by great beer i think we’d all agree, you slosh around the last few ounces in your glass, inhale those exotic aromas, savor that last mouthful and hope you have the chance to drink some more again soon

Scotch ale is not really an exciting style in my opinion, but surprise surprise, AleSmith does it well. Dark brown appearance with an off-white head. Pretty heavy stuff, lots of sweet caramel maltiness, hints of chocolate and smoke. Not much carbonation. Alcohol is there but fairly subdued for a 10-percenter.

750 mL capped bottle (late 2004 release, aged 6 months): brilliant purpled-hued garnet with a full, fluffy and thick tan head. Rich, roasted aromatics of smoked birch, alcohol soaked raisins, burnt melon and a slight pinyness, complex and developing overtime as my nose gets accustomed to the initial Earthy shock – it is like lounging in the woods in the summer after a quick downpour and the sun has come back out…a wonderfully malted sugar coats the tongue while the onslaught of piney, roasted bitterness provides a beautiful and flavourful backbone. A chocolaty component (giving way to plums and bitter cherries) comes to the forefront as the liquid warms and develops. A great and complex treat, nice job guys.

750ml from kryptic shared with mtjoseph. Pleasant, but not overpowering aroma. I was actually hoping for a bit more on the nose. Sweet malted barley, plenty of dry wood, some bitter chocolate, dry, grassy hops and alcohol on the nose. Even as the beer warmed, it remained subdued. Pours a murky rich brown with a thin white head. Rich and quite creamy on the tongue. Charred caramel, tobacco, leather, sweet malt (but not overly), some ashy smoke, charred wood, plenty of hops and alcohol. Wow. Plenty of flavor for sure. Finishes with a lasting ashy and yeasty dryness. I would love to try the BA version of this beer.
