J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Crushed with theDude. Pours a dark brownish color with a big old rocky, off whit head. Aroma is sweet, with caramel and brown sugar, a bit of smoke. Flavor has a bit of scotch in the beginning, with lots of dark fruits coming through. Finish is a bit of hops and caramelized sugar. Awesome beer.;

06 bottle. Pour is a dark ruby with a nice light tan head. Aroma of raisins, caramel, toffee, roasted malt and chocolate. Very nice smoke and fruit flavor. Tastes like chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruit, vanilla, and caramel. Medium body and carbonation. The best scotch I’ve had yet.

Draught: I had a sample of this at the brewery. It poured a somewhat mahogany brown color. A decent off-white head. I get the aroma of caramel malt sweetness, with a hint of peat and smokiness. There are similar notes to the taste. A full, rich, complex taste. Lovely.

Wee as in consumed by me, myself and I all in a rather Scottish mood. Had this a couple of years before getting another from a good friend so decided it was time to have at it. Nice malt and body with hops still in the play despite a good deal of time for all to oxydize. That last part didn’t seem the least bit detrimental to a beer like this - very appealing and that’s saying something for a guy that tends to lean to the hoppy side a lot. When oh when will I break out the other one?

Deep dark red with a firm tan head. Aromas of toffee, leather, vanilla, cocoa, earth, alcohol. Big bodied but not unbalanced in sweetness. Caramel, rum, brown sugar a tiny bit of smoke in the flavor. Warming alcohol finish. Exceptionally well balanced for such a big beer. Really no complaints but I must say that even some of the lower alcohol versions of the style take in a wider range of flavors. I miss some peat and possibly lactic qualities I would hope for. Still, a great beer.

GABF 2004. Dark reddish brown with a large, light-brown and long lasting head. Excellent lacing, lasted all the way to the bottom of each glass. Cereals and roasted/burnt malts in the aroma. Moderately sweet, lightly bitter flavor, peaty with toffee and caramel malts. Very full-bodied, creamy with soft carbonation. Finally, a Scotch ale with body!

Perfect-looking brew, I’ve been enticed by both the body and the aroma of this one. Incredible, highly fruited aroma, much like a barleywine: figs and cherries abound. The alcohol is obvious, but it’s not unpleasant, burning or astringent: it’s simply a nice warming feeling. Very smooth.

Bottle at the “Drink for Charity” event at Rattle & Hum. Pours a clear brown with a thin white head. Smoke and caramel and a bit of sweet malt on the nose. Medium thick body, with malt and a bit of smoke. A bit of alcohol coming through. Finishes a bit sweet with some more roast. Solid.
