Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned
J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Re-rate, this is the first bottle of Alesmith that I have purchase in Ohio. Burgundy/brown color, pour with a moderate brown head. Aroma is rich, like prunes, carmel and nuts all mixed together. Flavor is sweet, with some alcohol showing. Finish starts off syrupy and ends slightly dry with some hop bitterness shining through.

Bottle shared by me. Thanks dude! Pours a clear light brown with a thin tan head. Malty aroma with some roastiness and a bit of cherry. Roasted malt flavor up front with some sugar, fruit and booze with a touch of hops in the finish. Subtle chocolate and coffee flavors as well.

750 ml bottle

I wish I would have had this for #650 instead of the Yulesmith Summer edition. As good as that was this is probably the best beer I have tried in a while. It seems that Alesmith has not disappointed me yet as I work my way through their star studded lineup of craft beers. I look forward to getting another sample of the barrel aged version to see how this was affected by the aging.

Aroma / Appearance - A reddish-purple body looked nice under the moonlight. A short lived two finger head settled and left huge thick traces down the sides of the glass. Raspberries, chocolate truffle and thick velvet cake were so dense as to be almost suffocating. A hint of mint teased me as the possibilities within. It was almost as complex as some imperial stouts or huge fruit beers.

Flavor / Palate - The mouthfeel coated the tongue and throat leaving behind a mossy taste. Hops made an appearance but were well balanced. The finish of dark truffles and raspberries left me wanting to go right back to the store and buy another bottle. This was a fabulous beer that I’ll have to buy again at some point. The only thing keeping me from stocking this regularly is the price.

Reddish brown, nearly opaque. Could not force it to have a head no matter how high I held the bottle while pouring. Great malty smokey nose. Taste of coffee, chocolate, dark malts, dried fruit, and bitter hops. Wonderful complexity. Alcohol completely hidden except for thoughts of something far stronger than beer... at close to 10% hidding the alcohol could be dangerous. I really do like this beer, but I don’t want the rating to get out of alignment with other beers I have also really liked. From time to time I need to drink another Westvleteren to remind myself why this is not a 4.6.

YES! I love this beer. Bottle thanks to a generous extra from dchmela. Deep dark mahogany pour... looks cloudy, almost black with yellow/tan bubbly head. Lovely looking beer. And the taste... it’s a big beer, and sweet, but it does everything right. Complex malts, with notes of chocolate, peat, nuts roast, real caramel, slight vanilla, tobacco, and fruits... maybe raisins? Long, long finish and a silky--nay, velvety!--texture. What a pleasure. Yum.

Bottle. Dark brown with very little head, kind of looks like Coke. Sweet, malty aroma with lots of caramel, molasses and a hint of smokiness. Mildly sweet flavor of toasted malts, caramel and smoke. Dries a bit on the finish with a touch of hops. This is my fourth Alesmith beer and none have gotten under a 4.1 rating. I just wish they were available on the east coast.

750. Recently purchased from Liquid Solutions.
Beer is very dark brown, nearly opaque, with a small, white, frothy, very small, mostly and rapidly diminshing head.
The aroma’s inital impression is big, cloying and musty. It’s malty with moderate-to-heavy notes of roasted grain, moderate caramel, toasted crusts of bread. Over-powering, heavy vitamin B-spikey blackstrap molasses; Hoppy with a heavy note of resin/pine; Yeasty with a moderate note of basement, traces of dishrag and dough; Light miscellaneous notes of cardboard and alcohol, moderate brown sugar.
The flavor is heavily sweet, moderately bitter with a long, heavily bittersweet and grippy, moderately warm finish. Big, unpleasant molasses in the afterward.
The body is full, the texture is syrupy and the carbonation is soft-to-flat.
