J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

This was freaking awesome. PIcked it up in Ohio. I loved everything about it. Deep black color with no head. Smells like Scotch, carmel, molasses, and only a hint of chocolate. Pretty carbonated. Has flavors of butterschotch, Scotch, Almond extract, vanilla, chocolate, carmel, and heavy cream. Very very fucking smooth. This is such a kickass beer.

Bottle @ VA/DC/MD gathering: Dark red/brown with a tan head. Lots of malt, earth, peat, some smoke, sweet carmelized sugar, butterscotch, bitter hops towards the end. Nice.

Rating # 500. Pours a deep and dense mahogany and has a small layer of creamy head. Aroma reminds me of a chocolate and vanilla swirl ice cream but also has additions of blended nuts and toffee. The flavor is much more broad and is a rich profile of lightly roast malt, caramel, toffee, and again with the blended mixture of assorted nuts. Has a sweet syrup and coffee like aftertaste finish that makes this a lovely scoth ale to be enjoyed.

Thanks kiefdog for the share. Pours dark brown with nice tan head. Nose is lots of malt, maple, dark fruit, caramel, alcohol, and a smooth booziness. Flavor is lots of malt, dark fruit, alcohol, and some nuts. Enjoyable dark beer.

Robe brune foncée surmontée d’une mousse beige mince. Arômes de torréfié, de caramel et d’alcool. Saveurs de caramel, de chocolat, de torréfié et de levure.

This one pours a very dark brownish copper that is almost completely opaque in the glass. The large tan head lingers as a cap throughout leaving sheets of lacing. The aroma is big and complex and is dominated by the sweet, heavy caramel malts and brown sugar. There also plenty of dark fruits, raisins especially, and a hint of booze. The taste is just as complex as the aroma. The malts again dominate from start to finish There is a much bigger hop presence than the smell would suggest, some earthy hops and a bit of citrus. Finish is a dark fruit sweetness with the hops and some toffee lingering in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is crazy smooth, just silky. Lots of carbonation to accentuate the medium heavy body, keeping it from getting too cloying. This is one of, if not the best wee heavy I’ve ever tasted. It’s big and complex, yet very drinkable. Another great brew from AleSmith.

Deep brown in color with a thick off-white head. Smoked malt and peat in the nose with a darkly sweet flavor that is full of rich malt, peat, smoke and sugar. Big alcohol presence. Excellent.

Aroma is better than the taste and texture. Dark brown pour with moderate off-white head. Fruity sweet nose of plum, orange, alcohol and sweet chocolate. The flavor is heavily alcoholic and very sweet with notes of sweet malts, fruit and chocolate milk. Watery texture. Slightly sticky. Warm alcohol finish. Enjoyable.
