Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned
J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Thanks to bitbucket tasting. Love the mix of caramel malts, dark fruit, and chocolate. Not overly sweet. Very smooth for 10%.

This scotch ale is awesome. The Wee Heavy had many of the same aroma and flavor characteristics that the Speedway Stout has. They are not the same by any stretch, but you can definitely taste the similarities. The pour was a dark reddish brown with a huge head that stuck around for a long time. The aroma was of sweet chocolate malt, and a faint hint of coffee. There is a good smoky characteristic to the nose as well. The taste is very smooth and malty, with little in the hop department. The flavors are sweet malts, chocolate, and the coffee again. Way too easy to drink for a 10% ABV beer. The best scotch ale out there for sure."

RATING #500.

Thanks to Marc for this beer.

This is the first beer for which I ever traded. Not sure of the vintage, but I believe it’s at least a year old. Poured dark brown with ruby highlites with a small creamy light-tan head. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, cherries, wood. Interestingly, this is the first scotch ale I’ve had that has a nose somewhat reminiscent of scotch. Taste is mildy sweet caramel, molasses, touch of piney hops... has a dry evanescent whiskey character, which, according to the bottle, is to be expected of an older vintage. Very pleasant and complex flavor. Body is slick and moderately carbonated. Surprisingly elegant for the style. I’d be interested in trying a fresher vintage.

(750 ml bottle from Julio’s Liquors, cellared for 1 yr. after purchase) Pours tawny auburn/chestnut with a finger or so of yellowish-biege head that recedes to a thin cap. Sweet malty aroma of toffee and caramel with a sweet earthy overtone. Mouthfeel smooth, full, sticky and a bit fizzy. Plenty of nice heavy, persistent rings of lacing. Flavor is big sticky toffee and caramel overlain by a piney medium-bitter twang. Bitterness builds a bit towards finish and gives a nice hit. There are light hints of smoke and peat. A little hot but it is a nice warming alcohol presence. Kind of like McEwan’s but a little less sweet, less filtered and with a more American hop profile; a bit less rich and complex than Duck-Rabbit which is still my favorite Scotch.

Pours a deep brown-amber color with a creamy tan head that lasts a while. Lots of aroma of caramel, malt and yeast. Good flavor as well, similar to the aroma with some added chocolate and spice. Not my favorite style, but a truly great beer.

A medium woody weak old coffee color with a medium off-white head. A west coast(rain fresh/pine) hop aroma hits first , its not strong but noticed first. A thick caramel, coca-cola like, aroma, some alcohol. A sweet alcohol clinging taste. Silky mouthfeel. A good Scottish but not a top 50 beer.

Rerate Mar 2007. Beer poured dark brown with decent head and lacing. Got that "AleSmith yeasties" aroma. Flavor was caramel with very light smoke (for style), with candied sugaryness and that distinctive AleSmith yeast flavor. Delicious. For style, though, Belhaven Wee Heavy is still the beer to beat.

aroma upon opening is a rich dark chocolate with deep dark fruit spices. Pours a delicious brown with a thin head. After pour, the malt aroma comes out to play in a big way and the aroma almost has an irish cream note as well. Taste is nutty, with a hint of the alcohol behind it. Finish is a very nice malty crispness and toffee.
