Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

There are few that can compare with AleSmith!!! This one is a deep bronze with hints of ruby and a caramel-colored head that leaves bits of itself on the sides of the glass. Aroma is molasses, toffee, brown sugar, cocoa and smoke. Taste has hints of oak, along with nougat, caramel, and chocolate. This one tastes like a Milky Way by a campfire. Thick, coating, sticky...and this is one you’re glad you had and want to remember!!!

On-tap at Stone. Pours dark brown with burgundy highlights. Creamy off-white head, a little sticky, leaves a good amount of lace. Smells like raisins and super sweet malts. Tastes very sweet and malty, raisins and some booze. Thick mouthfeel, nice smooth carbonation. Definitely heavy and tasty.

This one was pretty big. Smell was initially strong of tootsie rolls and dark chocolate. Eventually, dark fruits came out. The taste was different, almost no hop character, other than the what is supposed to be there. Smokey and silky. Nice body, though somewhat one dimensional. Could have used some more chocolate character perhaps?

750ml split with CUJO. Amazed I forgot to rate this 3 months ago when I originally had this. Paraphrased from cujo’s review... Great looking pour, dark cola/coffee in color leaving a full finger of thick dry head. Nose is very complex with dark fruits, cooked sugars/malts. First sip reveals strong booze. After more tasting the mouth relaxes and reveals its complexity, again with the dark fruits, nice bitterness in the hops. As it got warmer more earthiness is drawn out, the woods/ pines come through. The lacing in the glass was surprising, a dark dry film had to be scratched off the glass. Not the deity I was expecting, but a great complex and balanced beer no doubt.

2008 Bottle - Thanks stefanje! - Pours a ruddy ruby amber with a massive tan head...aroma is dk fruit, sweet caramel, peaty spice and oak, flavour is similar, with a biscuty undertone and a shit ton of alcohol, totally should have sat on this for a while, but I wanted to drink it too much...a terrific early spring beer!...

The aroma is a pleasent combination of smokiness, caramel, and light hoppiness. The color is mahoggony with a tan head. The flavor has a caramel sweetness, with undertones of smokiness, chocolate, molasses, and some hop.

Crushed with Honkeybra. One hell of a profile with wonderful warmth. Fruity and scotchy on the nose, which leads into awesomeness. Finish is bitter and dry, but the fruits are the real dominant party in this sexy bitch of a brew. Intimidating.

[bottle at LCRBM] Liquorice, mollasses, a little port, slightly roasted. Thick, good warming finish.
