J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Big thanks to Fordest for the bottle!
without a doubt one of the better scottch ales available. a dark brown pour with some light showing through on the edges. not much of a head as I’m sure the high alcohol has a part in that. wonderful scottch aroma and flavor. good stuff! thanks Sean.

750 ml bottle: Thin but short lived light beige head w/a chestnut brown body. Immediate smokey & caramel malty aroma...UMMMMMM that deeply caramel, sightly roasty aroma! Also some nutty notes and hints of herbal hop along with alcohol. Lightly bready and yeasty as it warms, as well as some sugary sweetness. The smokey aroma seems more like peat smoked malt than from the yeast. Well balanced w/ a smokey & caramel flavor up front. Finish is malty sweet w/a bit of an herbal hop & roasty aftertaste. Some alcohol in the flavor, otherwise pretty cleanly malty. Smokiness also lingers into the long finish. A little warming in teh mouth at first, but smooths out as it warms. Thick, full body, and low carbonation. Wow! This is a pretty impressive wee heavy! It’s not quite as good as I remember it from 4-1/2 years ago, but it’s a darn fine beer.

Dark brown, very malty with just a small tap of bitterness on the back of the tongue. Slightly roasty and chocolaty. Very nice to my taste buds.

Pours a dark brown with thin tan head. Nice aroma of caramel malt, nuts, and some dark fruit. Very good flavor, with the malt really dominating. Very smooth and I thought it did a good job hiding the 10%. Very sweet. Nicely done by AleSmith.

Deep ruby body with a huge, rocky tan head. Aroma of caramely malts and alcohol. Flavor is intense and hop-laden, with the spicy hops complemented by a sweet smokiness. The smoke abounds as the flavor subsides into a roasty, dry finish. A finely crafted Scotch Ale, and by far the best example of the style I have yet to drink.

Pours a deep brown with an erupting smoky brown head. Aroma of caramel, peat, nuts, rasins, tobacco, malts. Flavor is nuts, molasses, smoke, peat, chocolate, caramel, roast. Very well balanced and hides the alcohol rather well. Awesome scotch ale, can’t believe I haven’t rated this before despite drinking it many times.

Bottle aged 5 months. A different tasting scotch ale. I thought it seemed more like a Belgian dubbel or quad. Dark w/ auburn/red highlights. Moderate head, well carbonated. Sour aroma had notes of cherries, coffee, raspberries. Palate was rich and sticky and had some toffee taste. As it warmed, the alcohol came out a bit more, but it was pretty well hidden.
