J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

4/19/02 It dosen’t get any better than this !!! But don’t let its 9% alcohol catch you unaware. This is a big, BOLD, kick ass brew !!! 5/6/03 2001 Vintage: Pours a dark amber-brown. Head is medium and tan. Light sweet aroma. Sweet complex flavors: Raisins and dates, caramel, a hint of cocoa, a hint of hops and smoke. Damn this is good!

Crimson head. Creamy head that clings to the side of the glass. strong aroma of hops and yeast. Taste hops upfront and a slight hot edge at the end of the beer. Very creamy on palate.

urs dark brown with small ivory head. Aroma is fairly weak with crystal and roasted malts coming through and some smoke. Flavor is pretty smokey throughout, caramel hits you first which then goes to the roasted malts, more chocolate as it withers away from your tongue with a big smokiness left in your mouth. This beer is smokier than I thought it would be although it goes well with the caramel and chocolate flavors and you can’t taste any hops. Big mouthfeel very chewy I had to really swish it on every sip and I kept smacking my tongue, it’s very lingering. Overall a very good example of the style.

Clear deep mahogany color with a medium head. Spare lacing. Aroma of brown sugar and toffee with just a hint of smoke. Taste is a bit warm, with caramel and all things sweet and malty. A bit of raisins and cherries, also. Rich and full bodied. Big and decadent.

Bottle Tampa Scotch Ale Blind Tasting. Pours a deep amber with a large tan head that leaves great lacing. Aroma is sweet caramel, chocolate chip cookies, earthy and slightly smokey. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium full mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and a hint of smooth alcohol. Very good.

Bottle, courtesy Gillard. Pours a dark brown, with a big foamy white head, and dripping lacing. Tons of caramel and toffee in the nose, with some spicy goodness. Cinnamon, nutmeg...Flavor has tons of malt character, as it strikes hard. Caramel and chocolate, some apricot. Extremely smooth and velvety, and while not necessarily true to the style, it’s so good I just don’t care.

Tried this in a small tasting glass at Cleveland Ale Fest (5/05). The lady who poured this did not know a thing about what she was doing. Consequently my pour was quite chunky with sediment. It was also dark brown. The aroma was difficult to place in a shot glass sized taster but I noted a crisply sweet scent. The flavor was most agreeable. Smoky malt sweetness. Wood and caramel, chocolate, and pine hops creeping in at the end. Very unique and flavorful, nothing like I expected (don’t usually like Scottish ale). The brew also had a medium body with some slickness to it. Dry finish marked by hops. I’ll re-rate this someday when I get a bottle for my self.

Tried a bottle for myself the other night. I was surprised to see that my initial rating was fairly acurate. Noted additional caramel and smokey aroma. Flavor notes this time included malty, minerals, marshmallows, caramel and smoke. Creamy but watery body. I’ve adjusted my score up a bit.

This brew had a very deep dark reddish hue to it. Nice thick head too. Nice sweet aroma that also had some German hops. Flavor of cherries and sweet malt. Thick creamy mouthfeel helped make this a really enjoyable beer. Thanks JB.
