J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

750 ml bottle from Market of Choice. Poured a deep red-brown with a nice white head and some light lacing. Aroma of caramel, dark fruit, peat and some woodiness. Flavor is full of malt and peat, toffee and plum/raisin fruitiness. By leaps and bounds the best scotch/wee heavy it’s ever been my pleasure to drink. Alcohol well masked as well.

Bottle. Dark reddish brown body, small light tan head, malty nose with smoky notes. Sweet, malty, raisins and dark fruits, some smoke, rich mouthfeel, hides the 10% dangerously well.

One year old bottle: Tawny copper pour with a smallish head. Fantastic lacing. Fantastic notes of sweet chocolate, raisins, wood and tobacco are wrapped in an ethery envelope. Lots of sweet molasses, caramels in the body lead to a long, sweet finish. Notes of brown sugar, charred wood, and earth linger. A great drinker that may be a tad better fresh with a stronger hop presence to balance the sweetness. Still great.

I finally found this one. I can’t figure out why it was so hard to find in San Diego. Pours dark mahogany with a thick tan head. Nutty, smoky aroma with smoe caramel. The taste is phenomenal. Toasty malts and buttescotch with a hint of bittersweet chocolate. Finish is creamy and sweet. Just an awesome beer.

Dark mahogney color with a medium off white head. Aroma of toffee, cocoa, smoke and hint of cobwebs. Light sweetness, a hint of licorice followed by a nice smokey flavor, light hops in the dry finish.

Bottle purchased in Los Angles, CA. Pours to a deep caramel to brown color, with a thick, tan head, and a soft carbonation. The nose on this beer is sweet and malty, with lots of good aromas of caramel, pipe tobacco, and hints of butterscotch. The palate is soft and full with lots of big sweet and caramel malt flavor. This beer finishes with big sweet and caramel malt flavor up front, then ends with a warming, soothing burn that lingers with more sweet malt. A cloying, but delicious beer, with fantastic sweet malt character. Excellent Wee Heavy, and a wonderful beer to match with a rich desert, or a perfect night cap.
