Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bottle from WeeHeavySD. Pours dark brown almost black with tan head. Aroma of caramel, dark fruits, and light peat and smoke. The taste was the same with good roasted notes. Alcohol is no around to spoil things. Rich and full bodied. smooth on the palate. I have always held off on getting this beer for some reason. I won’t be holding off anymore. Thanks, Jon.

0,75 l bottle, thanks Chimay67!
Fantastic appearance with a deep brown body and a creamy beige head. Fine aroma of coffee and molasses, nice cocoa and dried fruits, light hop. The body is rich with smooth mouthfeel....Fine roasted grains, caramel, toffee and mild hop, some wooden taste with dried fruits and cocoa. Well hidden alcohol warms me up. Fine, very fine!

Pours a deep russet brown with a tight knit , lacy tan head, Aroma is hgue malaonoidin caramel. Malty caramel, and alcohol. The body is HUGE! The flavors are oh-so-lightly caramel and chocolate with hints of plums and the smoothest most balanced hops I can imagine. Just astonishingly well made. Alesmith’s house character shines through in another impossible to replicate beer.

I can’t really get much aroma out of this. Slight caramel and alcoholic. Flavor is the least smoky and meaty that I’ve had for the style and I like that a lot. Way smooth Lots of caramel and some slight alcohol burn on the back of the throat. A great sipping beer and quite refined. For a bad style this is definitely out of this world.

bottle. big thanks to cmubeerman for this tasting. had it on tap at alesmith, but this is a lot better. currently having side-by-side with the barrel aged. surrprised with the chocolate in the aroma. a very tiny amount of dark fruit and a very tiny amount of alcohol. flavor is good. bbut nothing exceptional. not that much alcohol in the flavor.

Bottle from Julios in Mass. Sampled with Dennis Bell. Nice deep brown pour with mild off white head. Right away you can see this is a thick beer. Sweet brown sugar/ malt aroma captivates you and makes you beg for that first sip. The mouthful is thick and a mild smokey taste followed by roast and maybe hints of chocolate can be detected. Blended really well. Really really good. Dennis and I both did the cerimonial humping of the bottle.
