J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Medium reddish brown color. Head is small. Aroma is very malty and slightly smoky. Nice beer. Malts are peaty, smoky and very smooth. Very well balanced. Nice wee heavy. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. The 9% alcohol is not very noticeable. NICE wee heavy.

Fort Wayne event. This sixteenth and final brew of the evening also came from BigBadBear63. This brew poured a medium sized head of off-white colored bubbles that left behind a good lacing and a hazy softly carbonated brown colored body. It had a very nice malty "brown beer" aroma and the mouth feel was a medium bitter alcohol sensation that was only somewhat smooth but finished on the bitter side. The flavor also had some of that "brown beer" element to it as well as a sweet malt element to go along with the alcohol that was so noticeable. 8-4-7-4-14 Re-Rate: 8-5-8-4-17 Bottle at home. I like this bottle somewhat better than the one before. This bottle formed a small brown colored frothy head of fine to medium sized mostly diminishing bubbles that left behind a very good lacing and a nearly opaque dark ruby red brown colored body. The aroma was vinous with dark malt and port-like qualities with cherry wood and caramel notes. The mouth feel was tingly initially with a slight alcohol burn in the finish that soon mellowed. The flavor contained notes of dark malts port vinous malts and was rich and sweet with smoky mild roasty notes. It was rather yummy with a nice alcohol note to it.

Botter 75 cl. Average off-white light foamy head that mostly lasted. Good display of lacework. Dark mahogany color. Aroma was very dried fruity with a hint of smoke notes as well. Also some mild floral and grape like notes. Over the palate came heavy roasted malty and caramel notes with a good mix of alcohol to balance the sweetness. Also some notes of oak, toffee like and chocolate. Full bodied with an average carbonation and mild dry thick texture. Heavy heavy heavy sweet texture that is countered with some bitterness. Lingering sweet malty thick finish with a warming alcoholic touch. WOW what a beer, Eric you were not kidding when you said this beer rocks!

Bottle, obtained in a trade. Dark brown pour with little head. Sweet malty caramel and dark fruit dominate this beer. Another score for alesmith. 3.8 WTF was i thinking when i rated this last. This beer is the shit, it should be called that too. Nice woody dark chewy notes with caramelized sugar, a hint of tea, chocolate, nutty with some lush fruit y undertones. Just freaking fantastic! 4.4

Bottle tasted at ølbaren - thanks to Martin. Brown/red - white head. Sweet very malty, ryebread, roasted, caramel, noy any obvious hop-flavour. High carbonation. A very nice beer.

Clear, dark amber with a small, partly lasting head. Neutral-malty aroma with grainy maltiness, a touch of alcohol, and some dried fruit. Neutral flavor with strong maltiness held well in balance, the overall presentation being surprisingly dry for the body. Quite full-bodied with medium carbonation. A big beer, but by no means extreme. Seems a bit overrated here, but it is very tasty.
