Commercial Description:

J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Muchas gracias, sdbruboy! Pours a dark brown, near black color with nil for a head. Slightly peaty aroma with some malt and winey properties. The taste is wonderful: very sweet malt and alcoholic, bordering on a barley wine, with some vanilla, caramel, and smoke to finish her off. Mmmmm...

Bottle shared @ spuyten Duyvil, thanks to beastiefan2k. Pours a slightly cloudy deep amber with a thin lasting head. Aroma has a slight oxidation, very complex sweet malt, light smoke and peat, hints of coffee and chocolate as well. Very sweet flavor but not cloying, lots of thick sweet bready malts, molasses, and just a hint of smoke in the end, which I thought would have been a bit nicer if the smoke was increased a bit. Nice sweet and thick mouthfeel and goes down smooth. 9% abv is hidden very well.

Bottle that came courtesy of Reluctant Scooper and Beer Merchants following a competition I entered, consumed 18-03-09 Many thanks to Simon (Haddonsman) and Phil L This poured dark brown with a light beige head. Aroma is noticeably quite sweet plenty of dark cane sugar, vanilla, dark sticky fruits and some gentle wisps of alcohol. Flavour is just so wonderfully smooth, this a real sipper, very indulgent feel about it, simply marvellous. There is a rich creaminess about this the dark fruits come through there are sticky dates, port or sherry (not sure which, I get them mixed up when they show up in beer) vanilla and its just lovely. Got to forget about rating it and just sit back and enjoy the experience, bloody wonderful stuff. A8 A4 F9 P5 OV17 4.3

Bottled. Obviously more eccentric than its cousins in Europe - this one heavy malt experience. Maltsweet nose with a hint of chocolate and a bit smokey. Big spicyflavour with notes of chocolate. Rounded and fullbodied.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jerc & tupalev -- my bottle courtesy of fordest. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a small off-white head. Nice aroma with lots of malt and hops along with some wood, brown sugar, toffee and alcohol. Flavour of sweet malt, lots of hops, spices and alcohol. Nice medium to full body. I must say I was a tad letdown but only compared to many of Alesmith’s other fantastic beers, It’s still really good and I imagine will get even better with some ageing -- I will revisit it again in the future.
