| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 21, 2002 Updated: Mar 23, 2007Rerate: Newer bottles just don’t have the peaty, earthy depth, and are more sweet than the 2001 bottles. Original: Rerate 2001 bottle, shared with Hey_K and Frank - yes, deeply malty and with very handleable diacetyl, not too much alcohol in nose or flavor, intensely woody, but not sharp like oak, more mapley - delicious. Up from 4.2 to much more. Stored with great care for 2 years. Original: 4/21/02 - 2000 Bottle: Top notch. Rich maltiness, deep, chewy is absolutely right. Like I’m climbing Ben freakin’ Nevis. Sweet roasted malt notes in the aroma with a bit of subtle smokiness, red berry fruits, soft earthy spiciness, and brandied caramel. Deep malty flavor profile anchored by sweet alcoholic caramel/toffe maltiness with structured smokey roasted grain flavors woven into a superbly assertive though perfectly balanced body. Posesses an excellent roasted bitterness character in the big, full mouthfeel that is incredibly lively despite the dark, heavier flavor profile alongside a lovely perceived oxidation characteristic. Exceptionally well-balanced alcohol character that has an appropriately long, warm finish. Otje (668), Leiden, Netherlands

A truly delicious scotch ale. Pours deep dark chocolate, with a short lasting off white head. Yeast floaties all over in the liquid. Rich aroma of Smoke, cherries, chewy caramel, plums and moist chocolate. Flavor is similar to aroma with a nice roasty character. Nice rewarding finish. A strong yet approachable brew. Alesmith is quality all the way! This may be my highest rated beer yet! tennisjoel (950), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA

Dark red brown pour. Just a slight alcoholic bite. Very nice molasses, raisin, and just a touch of smoke here. A dry hoppy finish. Just another superb beer from a brewery that has not disappointed me with any of their beers. Now if they could only distribute in MN I would be an extremely happy man.

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 21, 2006 750ml bottle - Poured dark, reddish brown with a creamy, moderate sized head that left excellent lacing. The assertive aroma is a wonderful blend of yeast and malts with dark fruit notes. The intense flavor matches the aroma and throws in some coffee and chocolate notes in the dry finish. This ale has a big, full mouthfeel and little alcohol presence given the high ABV. It’s a truly excellent ale. The smiths have done it again. lethe (168), Stony Brook by way of Cincinnati, New York, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Aug 23, 2006 The quintessential scotch ale, wee heavy has a bracing fresh nose of baked bread, some yeast, and caramel sticky sweetness. Palate is amazingly smooth with soft carbonation. Flavor begins the same as the nose, but takes a turn for the richer, darker side with a plum and raisin character that is rounded out by a friendly smokiness. Chewy and intoxicating, this is an achievement in a brew.
