J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Nice thick, light tan head of fine dense bubbles. Settles slowly and very nicely. Light carbonation. Awesome rich aroma. Caramel, prunes, peat, raisins and a load of malt. My goodness there is a lot of stuff in there. Color is a very dark mahagony brown. Big alcohol punch. Loaded with plenty of chewy malts, peat and smoke. Just the way a great scotch ale should be. Some vinuous and oak notes in there also. Flavors become more complex as the brew warms. And warms it does, way down inside from the generous alcohol content. Finish is creamy and slightly smokey. A wonderful scotch ale and one that should be savored. Thanks TAR! A great big thanks to TAR for this gem amongst gems.

Can I tell you how excited I am to have some this coming in trade?! Oh, I just did! Woooooooo! Hella caramel. Nice peat smell too! Taste: smokey, peaty, sweet, chocolate, caramel, prunes, slightly vinous, and the yeasty beasties give a soft round chewy mouthfeel. I feel like a lush. Decadent. Yummy.

Sampled from draught at AleSmith Brewing Company.
Dark brown almost black beer with a small head. Sweet malty, caramelly and chocolaty aroma with little spices hidden behind the sweetness. A tone of alcohol also. Flavor is very full and heavy. Malty and hoppy with notes of chocolate and raisins and a fine warming bite of alcohol. Very smooth. Man, this shit is delicious!!!

Nice champagne bottle that we popped open for the 2005 beer exchange. What a ride as this one proved to be another great offering from Alesmith. The color surprised me a lot as it was deep and dark, not like a porter, but with a dark golden brown. The head looks like I may be able to stand on it, at least for a few seconds before I would sink into the greatest death anyone could dream of, drowning in a perfect blend of caramel malt, a little smoke, and superb use of hops. Nose is sweet and smoky, with a touch of alcohol there to let you know that you aren’t messing with a baby brew here, it is all barley. Sweetness abounds with the smoke and slight bitterness of the roasted caramel and hops. Nice, full body with a stickiness and smoothness that aren’t found in many brews. I loved it. Definitely the best scotch ale that I have ever tasted.

Bottle, provided by my cousin ggaughan. Deep ruby-brown color, with a thin tan head. Beautiful aroma - milk chocolate, vanilla, peat, and some smoke. Silky smooth mouthfeel. Huge malt body, nice chocolate flavor with some hops and smoke. really beautiful beer.

Smokey, portish, oaky nose, pours with a modest, rocky head; smooth, toasty, smokey flavor with some cocoa, coffee, light dark fruit notes; viscous and very smooth, but not cloying; a bitter roasted barley finish for balance; this is a knockout. I was afraid I would have to cap this for tomorrow....no chance. This just gets better as it warms, huge complexity. I always thought Wee’s were a bit too sweet, but not this one. The wee’est yet!
