J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

2001 750ML drank 11/2002: Pours a deep reddish orange color with lots of floaters under a tan head. Deep malt nose with a bit of sweetness and a tiny bit of peat/smokiness. Excellent mouthfeel that at first feels sticky but finishes dry. Sweet with a long peat aftertaste. A wonderful beer for a cold night. Thanks bigal96!

Bottle. Really lovely stuff. Drier than most scottish style ales i’ve had, but thats not necesarily a bad thing. Some light sweet caramel and vanilla in the start, with some licorice and roasted malt towards the end. Slight tart bitterness in the finish, extremely tasty stuff, i want more. MASSIVE THANKS TO CLARKVV. Glad i got the chance to share it with everyone at the Low Countries Gathering.

Deep copper color with red/ruby hues. Nice head and sticky lace. Thick sweet malty nose, caramel and touches of smokey peat. Thick, smooth, soft, chewy body with perfect carbonaton. Palate is chewy malts, caramel, toffee and a touch of peaty smoke that intensifies as the beer warms. Nice earthy hop finish to balance the sweetness of the malt. This badboy is world class. For some the sweetness may be fatiging but I cant find much wrong with it. Its rich, full in flavor and a joy to sip. Alcohol is masked very nicely as well. This should be the standard for Scottish Ales IMHO. Enjoy gentleman. Thank you Gusler. Havent had a bad Alesmith yet.

Reddish-brown and very clear. No head and none really expected. Big malt aroma. Some alcohol. Slight smokiness in the nose. Nice fruitiness. Extremely malty flavor. Smoky carmelized flavor. A little tingly on the tongue. Full body. Some sweetness. Slight roast. An excellent Wee Heavy!

Chestnut color with a light fine head. Plethora of malt aromas. Aromas of caramel, surghum/molassas, slightly earthy with a touch of peat. Flavors of light chocolate, dates and molassas. Just a touch of peat to make it interesting. As it warms the alcohol comes out a bit, both in aroma and in warming feel. Almost silky in feel. Belhaven Wee Heavy with a kick.

Oh yeah baby! Vintage 2001. Chestnut brown body with a thin, clear miniscus that began as a dense tan head. Very malty and nutty aromas abound. Started out a tad medicinal from the alcohol but settles into flavors of prunes, nuts and creamy chocolate. A mild bitterness hovers throughout a beer that leaves you with a tear in your eye and only wanting more. Thanks to Gusler for providing me with this gem.

Pours a deep russet brown with a tight knit , lacy tan head, Aroma is hgue malaonoidin caramel. Malty caramel, and alcohol. The body is HUGE! The flavors are oh-so-lightly caramel and chocolate with hints of plums and the smoothest most balanced hops I can imagine. Just astonishingly well made. Alesmith’s house character shines through in another impossible to replicate beer.

Deep amber color, moderate head formation. Warm, malty aroma, thick caramel. Lightly, sourish initial flavor, sequencing to a moderately sweet, somewhat salty medicinalness. Knurled, roasty complex finish with expected light hoppiness. Just great.
