Looks nice, redbrown, nice head. Very good aroma with caramel, dried fruits, lots of malt, a bit nutty with hints of sugar. Flavour is sweet and malty but still balanced with nice amounts of toffee, dried fruits, nuts and a bit of a warming feel but overall very well hidden alcohol otherwise. Very nice, thick, smooth and fullbodied on the palate. Not a dissapointment - one of the best beers during the tasting. BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA

You get so much out of the nose, toffee, caramel and just a hint of that campfire smoke and perhaps even a bit of tobacco and tar. All the things that delight you and tell you what will follow in the flavors. The mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, extremely well rounded and balanced. craftycarl21 (580), South Hero, Vermont, USA

Aroma of roasted malt, toffe, vanilla, a hint of nectarine, and molasses. Palate is creamy beyond belief, flavor brings roasted malts to the forefront, slight alcohol in the front part of the sip, still hints of vanilla. Stupendous beer overall. Deep dark mahogany pour... looks cloudy, almost black with yellow/tan bubbly head. Lovely looking beer. And the taste... it’s a big beer, and sweet, but it does everything right. Complex malts, with notes of chocolate, peat, nuts roast, real caramel, slight vanilla, tobacco, and fruits... maybe raisins? Long, long finish and a silky--nay, velvety!--texture. What a pleasure. Aroma is dominated by a wonderful punch of carmel malt. There is also alcohol and roasted nuts in the nose, with a hint of hops. Flavor is alcohol, malt and a very nice aftertaste of apples. Very good! One of my favorites! MrChopin (688), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

Huge caramel and fig nose, some brown sugar. Reminiscent of a quad. Delicious flavor, mix of caramel, raisin, smoky malt, alcohol. Great mouth too, huge and delicate. Wonderful stuff here, it all comes back scotch in the end, superb combo. Arguably the best I’ve had from AleSmith. LtDan (528), Los Angeles County, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jan 19, 2009 Appearance: Pours like black coffee and starts with a tan 1/2 inch head. A creamy ring of suds stays at the top after the head subsides.
Aroma: Raisins, chocolate, plum, and dark roasted malt.
Taste: Raisins, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, a good amount of spicy hops, coffee, coca cola and booze. Also reminds me a little bit of Black Forrest cake.
Mouthfeel: Chewy and thick, and very smooth.
Overall: A fantastically complex beer that only gets better as it warms up. A great use of roasted malts and spicy bitter hops. I dare anyone to try this beer and find fault in it. Not sure it can be done.
