J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

VVoVV, nose meet Wee Heavy> Awesome brew. Pours a murky dark amber. Great smell to it, a little smoky? with some malt. Taste is much of the same, with some caramel. Very good brew. :moneyL

750 ml bottle - pours deep brown with slight haze; cream colored head settles to the edges; aromas are rich and thick with level of sweetness; malty, dates and candy; texture is just a delight; thick malty backbone and sweet aftertaste; this is a great beer and by great beer i think we’d all agree, you slosh around the last few ounces in your glass, inhale those exotic aromas, savor that last mouthful and hope you have the chance to drink some more again soon

Dark chocolate color. Medium beige head that laces. Spicy phenols with raisin prune and roasted malt aromas. Flavor is spicy with a rich malt backbone and a hint of peated malt. Hopping is moderate. Most of the bitterness comes from the acrid character of the roasted malt. The finsih has a licorice anise effervescence. A truly multidimensional beer!

Picked up a 750 ml bottle at John’s Market Place in Portland, OR and bootlegged it back to RBSG ’07. Pours a dark reddish brown brew with a decent beige head that dissolves very slowly to a fine film. Aroma of smoky molasses, raisin, caramel, peat and brown sugar. Taste is thick, sweet and creamy with some roasted nut and dark chocolate character. Finish is sweet and some smoky caramael aftertaste. Man is this good.

Bottle from Liquor Barn in Redding, CA. Poured a brown color and looked like maple syrup coming out of the bottle. Smelled of sweet malts. Flavors of brown sugar, carmel and raisins dominated the beer. Went down smooth and had a wonderful feel on the palate. This instantly become one of my favorites.

Champagne bottle. Pours dark brown color with a small tan colored head and lots of floaties. Whoaaa aroma is incredibly malty and sweet, lots of caramel, toffee, chocolate, and honey. Chocolate and dark fruits dominate the flavor, nice alcohol warmth that you’ll feel deep in your chest. As said, chewy mouthfeel. Freakin amazing.

Bottled sample, thanks to Weine, Dempa etc. This was one of my wishes for a big "beer blog-tasting" in Gothenburg, Sweden. Looks nice, redbrown, nice head. Very good aroma with caramel, dried fruits, lots of malt, a bit nutty with hints of sugar. Flavour is sweet and malty but still balanced with nice amounts of toffee, dried fruits, nuts and a bit of a warming feel but overall very well hidden alcohol otherwise. Very nice, thick, smooth and fullbodied on the palate. Not a dissapointment - one of the best beers during the tasting.

~Pours a nice red color (when held to light) with plenty of carbonation and thick creamy off white head. ~Very sweet malty aroma with alcohol and dark fruits. ~Sweet smoky malt flavor, caramel, raisin and wood. ~Full bodied, a bit chewy, alcohol tongue tingles. Great finish. Bitter and a tad salty. Alcohol leaves warming sensation throughout mouth. ~Very enjoyable. I wish this was easier for me to find in my area. I would love to try this on a cold winter night after a day on the mountain.
