J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Pours a transparent black with a ruby tint. The aroma is cherry, sugar, toasted barley and chocolate. The taste is dark pitted fruit, caramel, grahm cracker, molasses and nuts, with a slight hop bitterness. In the aftertaste I detect a bit of baking cocoa. The mouthfeel is full and creamy, yet spritzy on the carbonation. The flavor has a long residence time that sticks to the top of the mouth. This is insane!

The best scotch ale I’ve ever had. Poured a dark red with a good sized tan head that lasted. Aroma of sweet malt and hops. Mostly malt. Taste of sweet caramel malt with a hint of hops. Very smoothe and very sweet.

Bottle courtesy of daknole. I shared this bottle with a group of guys whose experience with beer ranged from aspiring beer geek to complete novice. It received rave reviews from all. It poured a pretty burgundy with a large, fluffy, beige head that left sticky lace in its wake. The nose was sweet, dark and malty with a light peat malt note. Full-bodied and creamy with a drying and mildly bitter finish. The flavor was a solid, round, sweet and lightly peaty malt with an earthy hop addition at the finish. This is a very nice beer in every regard and is very different yet nearly as satisfying as its barrel-aged version. It is definitely a beer that I won’t hesitate to stock-up on if I find the opportunity.

Bottle. Pours a deep mahogany with a massive silky head and excellent retention. Good lacing. As far as aroma? Blindfold me beforehand and I would swear this was chocolate milk. Maybe a little whiskey as well. Absolutely creamy mouthfeel. Taste is caramel and brown sugar with the faintest bitterness at the end. I’ve been kind of afraid of scotch ales after I barely choked down McEwan’s, but this is nice.

Huge beer. Dark brown and red pour with a soft medium off-white head. Sweet fruity and malty aromas, very complex sweet flavors leading into a strong and crisp alcoholic bite to a dry finish.

Snifter. Pours deep red with copious beige head. Aroma is powerful and complex. Caramel, toffee, molasses, and toastyness are all characteristics of the malt alone. Other aromas include vanilla, and walnut, though roasted malt is prevalent and hard hitting. Flavor Was huge of malt, hitting from every possible angle. Malt character and complexity of this nature is seldom seen, and unrivaled in my expirience. So many flavors and facets of the malt come out not only in this style, but in this particular well honed example. Palate is incredibly smooth, creamy, full, rich, viscous, with a sticky coating property and some tingling carbonation. An amazing example of an amazing style- big ups to Alesmith for this beast of a brew.

Bottle. Light tan, full creamy head, dark rich red-brown in appearance. Sweet aroma, raisins, berries, hint of malt. Tastes strongly of malt, dried fruit, hops. Nice acidity, lingers on the palate. Delightful Scotch Ale.

Had it on cask at RBSG 08. Taste was a lot creamier, with lingering toasty and bitter malt notes. Even more awesome than in a bottle.
